Todd Schmitz, well-known today as the club coach of Olympic champion Missy Franklin, has been inducted into the Metro State University’s Hall of Fame for his swimming achievements.
Schmitz was an NCAA qualifier and an All-American for the now-defunct MSU-Denver Roadrunners swimming & diving program. Schmitz earned four letters between 1998 and 2001. He graduated with a degree in finance, but noted in this USA Swimming interview from a few years back that the 9/11 terrorist attacks drastically changed the finance industry immediately following his college graduation.
Schmitz notably waited tables for about a year before getting involved in coaching with a team called the Colorado Stars. The rest, as they say, is history, as Schmitz would eventually become the head coach of the club and help guide Franklin to one of the greatest under-18 swimming careers in the history of the sport.
