Cornell Men, Women Sweep Colgate on the Road

The Big Red traveled to Colgate on Saturday to battle the Raiders who were celebrating Senior Day. Colgate men overcame their hosts by a score of 204-80, while the women beat Colgate, 173-112. Full results.

Women’s Meet

The host team got things started with a narrow win in the 200 IM. Morgan Cohara, Cammie Kirby, Maggie Carney, and Rosannah Petit edged Cornell’s Tessa Wilson, Chandra Yueh, Emily Rhodes, and Cari Stankaitis, 1:49.81 to 1:50.16.

One of the biggest scorers for the day was Cornell’s Jenna Immormino, who claimed titles in the 200 free (1:53.86), 50 free (24.12), and 100 fly (57.47). Teammate Wilson won both backstrokes, going 59.10 in the 100 to Colgate’s Meghan Shroyer (59.84), and 2:09.20 to lead a 1-2-3 Big Red sweep in the 200. Shroyer later finished third in the 200 IM (2:13.25) behind Cornell’s Currie Murch Elliot (2:10.10) and Jennifer Zhang (2:12.13).

Billy Murch Elliot won the 400 IM and 200 fly for Cornell. Colgate’s Lizzie Thayer (2:13.51) denied Carney (2:13.77) of making it a 1-2 Big Red finish in the 200fly. Cornell also picked up two wins from Bianca Herlitz-Ferguson in the diving events.

Colgate also saw strong performances from Cammie Kirby, who won the 100 breast in 1:07.88, and Megan Gallagher. Gallagher and Cohara finished 1-2 in the 500 free, going 5:09.07 and 5:10.17, respectively. Gallagher was also runner-up in the 200 free, finishing .26 behind Immormino with 1:54.12.

Men’s Meet

Cornell overpowered the Raiders from the get-go, opening with a 1-2 sweep in the medley relay and continuing to place the top two or three on the podium in nearly every event. Eric May, Dylan Sali, Alex Evdokimov, and David Zurmuhl combined for 1:34.87 over teammates Victor Luo, Kevin Kreher, Taylor Adams, and Tim Satterthwaite (1:35.26) and Colgate’s Des Cairns, Haakon Brekke, Danny Graham, and Andrew Hacker (1:47.36).

May and Sali both doubled for Cornell. May swept the 100 and 200 butterflies with 51.93 and 1:54.77, while Sali added a pair of victories in breaststroke (58.44 in the 100 and 2:11.33 in the 200). Teammate Michael Reynolds also contributed two firsts: he clocked a 21.81 to win the 50 free and 4:46.17 to just out-touch Colgate’s Dominic Wilkins (4:46.52) in the 500. Hacker picked up a bronze for Colgate with 4:52.81.

Wilkins, meanwhile grabbed a win in the 200 free, outpacing Cornell’s David Zurmuhl, 1:45.29 to 1:46.12. Cornell’s Cairns was runner-up in the 100 back, losing a close contest to Cornell’s Luo, 52.95 to 53.17.

Cornell’s Carl St. John swept the IM events, edging teammate Vincent Declercq in the 400 IM, 4:16.23 to 4:16.58, and again in the 200, 1:59.18 to 2:00.74. Cornell added points in the diving events as Deyon Godbay and Tommy Hallowell each won one.
