The Iowa State women moved to 23-1 all-time against in-state rivals Northern Iowa after topping the Panthers by an exhibition-aided 197-99 score on Friday in Ames.
Iowa State held a 92-39 lead heading into the first diving break, and by event 12 (of 18), they exhibitioned all but event winners.
“I was pleased with the way that we raced. In the close races we seemed to get a lot of the touch-out wins,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. “Up and down, we really raced the way that we need to race.”
Senior Amanda Paulson picked up four wins on the day: two individually and two on relays.
She split a 23.20 to anchor Iowa State’s winning 200 medley relay (1:45.76), and was 23.47 in the same position on the winning 400 free relay (1:36.34). In between, the sprint freestyler and butterflier added wins in the individual 50 free (23.62) and individual 100 fly (57.32).
That brings Paulson up to 96 career wins all-time as an Iowa State swimmer, and with two regular-season meets left to go (against West Virginia on Saturday, and against Kansas on February 6th & 6th), she has a chance of adding 100 career wins to her resume. Paulson is already one of the most decorated swimmers in program history, which includes three-straight Most Valuable Swimmer awards.
For Northern Iowa, the bright spot of the meet came early when freshman Rachel Siebenaller won the women’s 1000 free in 10:26.16. She beat out Iowa State freshman Mary Kate Luddy (10:33.89). That’s a season-best time for the rangy freestyle
That winning time is a season-best time for the rangy freestyler out of Wisconsin.
Siebenaller also took 2nd in the 500 free in 5:06.93, placing behind Iowa State’s Karyl Clarete (5:05.47).
