Arizona State Women Pick Up Home Win Over Oregon State

This afternoon, Oregon State University’s women’s swim team met Arizona State University’s women’s team for a dual meet in Tempe, Arizona. Arizona State was in control of the dual meet from the very beginning. The Sun Devils began the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay, and they finished off the meet with another win in the 400 freestyle relay. Overall, ASU posted wins in 12 of the 14 events of the meet.

Oregon State’s Sammy Harrison swept the distance freestyle events, giving her team their two event wins of the session. Harrison swam a 16:41.32 in the 1650 freestyle event, and she touched the wall in 4:56.97 in the 500 freestyle event.

Ingibjorg Jonsdottir of Arizona State claimed three wins at the meet this afternoon. She swam the backstroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay and won the 100 backstroke in an NCAA B cut time of 55.00. She also swam a leg of the 400 freestyle relay for the Sun Devils.

Several other swimmers had two event wins each at the meet. Juanita Barreto of ASU took first in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 1:50.53. She also swam to a win in the ASU 400 freestyle A relay at the end of the meet. ASU’s Alysha Bush picked up two wins during the meet as well. Her time of 51.48 won the 100 freestyle event, and she joined Jonsdottir and Barreto on the winning 400 freestyle relay. The same was true for Melanie Busch of ASU: she won the 50 freestyle in 23.75, and then swam a leg of that winning 400 freestyle relay. Jorie Caneta claimed two wins at the meet as well. Her 1:03.26 in the 100 breaststroke was the top time, and she also swam the breaststroke leg of the winning ASU 200 medley relay.

Final score: Arizona State University – 153; Oregon State University – 100

Arizona State will next swim at home on January 9th when the team hosts Utah (12 pm) and again on January 10th against Brigham Young (12 pm). Oregon State will swim against UCLA at home January 16-17 (5pm on the 16th and 11 am on the 17th).
