The YMCA of Western North Carolina in Asheville announced the hiring of Brian Tremml as the new Assistant Director of Competitive Swimming today. Tremml will direct the training of all age group swim programs within the Piranhas Swim Team. Tremml comes to Asheville from Iowa City, Iowa where he has been working for the past two years as an Assistant Coach for the Iowa Flyers Swim Club.
Tremml previously swam for the University of Iowa from 2008-2012, competing primarily in the 200 butterfly for the Hawkeyes. During that span, Tremml helped improve the team’s overall ranking in the Big Ten, culminating in the team’s best finish (5th) since 1996 during his senior season.
Kirk Hampleman, current Director at WNCY, coached Tremml when he was on staff at the University of Iowa. Hampleman took over WNCY one year ago, and has already experienced great results, guiding the team to a 14th place finish at last summer’s YMCA Long Course Nationals. Three-time individual YMCA National title winner Alyssa Arwood, who will be attending Duke University in the fall of 2015, swims for the Piranhas.
“We are so excited to have Brian as a part of our program. Brian has a true passion for the sport of swimming and will make a huge impact with our youth swimmers” said Hampleman of the hire.
Tremml is also behind the upcoming documentary “The Water Is My Sky,” which features current National Team Member Connor Jaeger and former YMCA swimmer/Olympic bronze medalist Tom Wilkens. Tremml fully intends to continue work on the film, which as of now is scheduled to debut sometime in the buildup to the 2016 Games in Rio.
“I am absolutely thrilled to join such an outstanding organization and to be given the opportunity to work alongside my former mentor and great friend,” said Tremml. “To be able to give back to the sport that afforded me so many great opportunities means a great deal to me. I could not be more excited to get started making an impact here in Asheville and beyond.”
