SMU Mustangs hosted the Rice University women’s swimming and diving team in Mansfield Natatorium on Friday, and came away with a 142-89 win over the previously undefeated Owls.
The Mustangs opened the score with a 1-2 finish in the 200 medley relay led by the team of Isabella Arcila (26.39), Tara-Lynn Nicholas (34.80), Marne Erasmus (20.29), and Nicole Parmenter (24.06), who touched in 1:45.54. Rice’s Faith Hirschi, Madison Livingston, Kiley Beall, and Marissa Konicke went 1:49.61.
Rice senior Erin Flanagan won the distance free events, going 10:08.03 in the 1000 and 4:55.96 in the 500. SMU’s Ursa Bezan was runner-up in both races with 10:21.61 and 4:58.85, respectively.
Another Rice senior, Casey Clark, completed her own double when she won both the 200 (1:51.14) and the 100 (51.01) frees. In the 200, it was SMU freshman Adri Santa who scored first for the Mustangs; she picked up a second-place finish with 1:54.00. Nathalie Lindborg, a senior at SMU, took second in the 100 free going 51.29; her teammate Santa was third in 52.30.
SMU senior Arcila won both the 50 free and 100 back. Arcila went 23.47 in the free, the only sub-24 sprinter in the field. Teammate Lindbord (24.21) was second; Rice junior Cora McKenzie (24.29), third. In the fly, Arcila won by a comfortable margin with 56.82. The next seven finishers came in nearly together, but Owls Taylor Armstrong (59.11) and Julie Litver (59.42) scored the points for second and third, respectively.
Sophomore Kirsty McLauchlan clocked a 4:26.31 to give the Mustangs top billing in the 400 IM. Rice freshman Kaitlyn Swinney (4:26.87) led for 300 yards but McLauchlan proved too tough in the final 100 free so Swinney was relegated to second. Her teammate, senior Madison Livingston, took third with 4:34.54.
After splitting a 20.3 50 fly in SMU’s medley relay, sophomore Erasmus came back with a 55.47 to claim first place in the 100 fly. Rice freshman Kiley Beall (56.47) and senior Marissa Konicke (56.81) rounded out the podium.
SMU senior Rachel Nicol went 1:03.14 and won the 100 breast ahead of teammate Nicholas (1:03.70) and Livingston of Rice (1:07.51).
The Mustangs scored all the diving points on the strength of their two entrants: Madeline Wainman and Lauren Lamb. Wainman won the 1-meter diving 239.69-212.99 and the 3-meter, 321.98-238.73.
SMU topped the meet off with a victory in the 400 free relay. Lindborg (51.41), Erasmus (51.97), Bezan (51.93), and Santa (52.55) combined for 3:27.86. Rice’s quartet (McKenzie, Clark, Konicke, and Hannah Deters) was second to the wall in 3:32.47.
