As many have pointed out, MP’s scenario is unique in that he is MP. I think, however, that even though he is 1.) rich and 2.) white, he will dodge any jail time. From my own experience (I have also had two DUI’s) I’d like to say that I am FAR from rich, and I had spent a total of about 3 days in jail for my offenses. The only reason why I spent those days was because I couldn’t contact anyone via phone to pick me up. Don’t get me wrong; there is a a privilege bias in the judicial system, and not all crimes are punished accordingly – however I think if he gets a slap on the… Read more »

Yes, he made another big mistake, lets all pray he learns from this one, does not do this again, and focuses on the talent which the Lord has granted him.

This is sheer speculation, but, as someone who plays a decent amount of poker close to where Phelps lives, I have several sources who’ve told me that Phelps plays a decent amount of 2/5 casino poker in the Baltimore area. Someone mentioned this earlier, but it’s very likely he was at the horseshoe casino Monday night…the tunnel where he was stopped is less than five miles from the casino.

For those wondering what Phelps was doing out on a Monday night, this is by far the most likely scenario (doesn’t mean it’s what happened). Who knows why he was driving so recklessly…poker is an emotional game…keep in mind this is sheer speculation…

The people I’ve talked to (dealers and… Read more »

Someone just posted that TMZ is claiming he was on an 8 hour gambling binge. I think we can now reliably say with a credible source that this is what happened…

I think its important to remember that we don’t know everything about Michael Phelps’ personal life. He didn’t kill anyone, thank God, he may sometime in the future, but he will have to deal with the consequences of his actions. I’m sure everyone has something better to do than argue over Michael Phelps’ actions and morals…he’s a human being…just like the rest of us.

Exactly what I was wondering! Who would let a drunk Michael Phelps drive a car at 1 in the morning?

According to the (unbelievably) increasingly reliable TMZ.com, he was on an 8 hour gambling binge at Baltimore casino. I doubt many of his swim buddies could afford 8 hours of gambling. Unfortunately, it’s beginning to sound like he has more than one addiction.

If he was alone, then jeez he has a problem. but say he brought friends, or a friend. I don’t give a hoot how long your gambling, if your my friend and your MP, or any Olympic athlete like that i’m stayin there to make sure A) you don’t lose all your money B) you don’t drive home drunk and C) some dummy doesn’t try and get your riled up so you punch him.

and I know someone very very well who has talked to him during photo shoots and he has mentioned gambling a lot of money in single hands that we would only dream of. so your probably right on the more than one addiction.

I meant anyone who saw him, I wouldn’t let a drunk MP leave.

I’m just curious who he parties with like this. geez if he was my friend i’d be his DD every time, any time. he has too much on the line. his “friends” or whoever he was partyin with must suck.

for those saying he is human he makes a mistake, blah blah. You’d be singing a different tune had he say wrecked his car and broke his collar bone. You’d all be saying he is dumb just like the rest of us. i’m not sayin he is dumb for drinkin and getting hammered. but dude get a driver.

David, I was away from SwimSwam for a couple of days, and I’m kind of in shock to return and get this news. MP’s behavior is indefensible and unlawful. He will be charged with a crime and receive a penalty. It is important to me not to judge other people, so while Phelps’ behavior is a crime that will have consequences, he is still the same person he was yesterday. If he’s willing to admit his guilt, accept his punishment, and change his behavior, then he is worthy of forgiveness.

As I process this situation, I think your comment describes my feelings perfectly. I thought MP’s life was moving in a positive direction, and now I see that I… Read more »
