2014 U.S. Jr. Pan Pacs Trip, Michael Andrew Video Log, Day 1

The members of the 2014 United States Jr. Pan Pacs team arrived in Maui, Hawaii on Monday to prepare for racing that begins on Wednesday, including several swimmers who are making their Team USA debuts.

Among those first timers is the only professional swimmer on the roster – 15-year old Michael Andrew. Andrew documented the first day of his first trip in this quick video log, highlighting mostly traveling (by bus, by plane). Pretty much everyone on Team USA is featured in this video at some point (although, Andrew never turns the camera on himself), and so far everyone looks like they’re having a good time (half of them are missing school for the meet – so they should be in a good mood).

He doesn’t take a “video selfie” but somebody filmed him practicing a backstroke start at :42 seconds.

Michael Andrew is like Johnny Manziel in that the media really likes to discuss him.

Not sure the article is as much about Michael as it about the fact that Michael shared his video of everyone else (but himself) – the future of U.S. swimming on what is, for many (if not most) their first foray into international competition on behalf of their country. I can only assume, Mr. Vanderlegh10, that your glass is half empty.

I didn’t watch the video so I cannot say who was in it or what it was about. I was not specifically commenting on this video.

I stand by my initial statement that the media, particularly SwimSwam, loves putting up articles pertaining to Michael Andrew similar to how sports media can’t get enough of Manziel. I often laugh at how over involved the media often gets when covering athletes.

Example 1–Lebron was nearing his 2nd “Decision” and Brian Windhorst begged Lebron to make a decision so everyone could get on with their lives. Unfortunately he was right.

Example 2–I remember when Favre was coming out of one of his retirements, and ESPN sent reporters to interview Favre on his… Read more »

Art, it’s humorous that you have to use an analogy about Peyton Manning, Lebron James, etc to prove a point about a relatively unknown athlete. Your examples hold no water, unlike your glass.

So Michael Andrew like johnny manziel because he is an untested, show boating, narcissistic, only good cause his teammate mike evans was a beast? or because you don’t like hearing about him? Media talks about JM because eventually he will explode, and his bad boy antics. MA on the other hand, they talk about him cause he is really good at his age and actually a nice guy, not because he is a hot head that flicks off his competition.

MA is a kid having a good time, and he posted a video he made, giving us a glimps into the lift of a Jr. pan pac member.

ArtV – For someone who eschews media coverage of sports figures, you sure spend a lot of time following media stories of, um, sports figures, and commenting on them. However, I can only surmise that, since you didn’t watch the video, you’d have preferred it if SwimSwam simply posted the video without any accreditation as to from whence it came (at least insofar as it came from “he who shall not be named”!).

I hope they’re having fun, developing friendships, staying relaxed and preparing to swim fast! Go Team USA! 🙂
