We’re down to one day left of the 2014 European Championships, and a huge British effort still has that country atop the medal tallies. Day 6 was a big one for Hungary, and also saw Italy jump to second place in golds.
The Hungarians got four total medals, with distance swimmer Boglarka Kapas taking silver along with Katinka Hosszu and Laszlo Cseh. Hungary has 11 total medals, third-most of the meet so far.
Italy picked up its 5th gold medal as Federica Pellegrini dominated the 200 free. That pulls them into a tie with Denmark for second overall, with Britain leading at 6. Denmark had gotten big production from backstroker Mie Nielsen, and she kept that trend going with a bronze in the 50 back, her weakest of the backstroking distances.
Great Britain got a pair of golds today, including a 1-2 in the women’s 50 back. Also nabbing double gold was Poland, which tripled its total medals for the week with wins from Konrad Czerniak in the 100 fly and Radoslaw Kawecki in the 200 back.
Jumping into the medal counts for the first time today were Slovenia and Belgium with a bronze each. That brings our total to 19 teams with a medal thus far in 34 total events.

Italy is also making strides in the overall medal count, which includes diving, open water swimming and synchronized swimming. With only 1 diving event left and the other two disciplines wrapped up, the finish will come down to pool swimming, with Russia and Italy tied at 8 golds apiece. Italy has 21 total medals, the most of any nation, and they’ve cleaned up the bronzes with 11.

The overall medal table doesn’t include most of today’s medals. There is a three way battle at the top with GB, Russia and Italy all now on eight golds.
