87 New U.S. Olympic Trials Cuts Achieved at 18&U Spring Cup Meets

The 18&U Spring Cup meets were held at 4 sites last weekend, presenting an opportunity for an 18&under championship-style meet ahead of the U.S. Olympic Trials in just a handful of weeks. Swimmers took full advantage of the meet, achieving a massive amount of new Olympic Trials cuts. We’ve compiled all the Trials standards met from the meet, and taken out cuts that swimmers already had. That process left us with a stunning 87 new Trials cuts achieved – 70 Wave I cuts, and 17 Wave II cuts.

Among the highlights of these new cuts is Torri Huske‘s 1:58.09 200 free. The Arlington Aquatic Club 18-year-old has rapidly become a contender to make the U.S Olympic team in a handful of events, and smashed her 200 free best time last weekend, putting her in the mix to potentially make the 200 free final at the Trials. Huske was under Trials cuts in her other 5 events, but already held the Wave II standards in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly, 200 fly, and 200 IM.

Sara Stotler, a 17-year-old from Florida’s Planet Swim Aquatics, picked up 3 new cuts, including a Wave II cut in the women’s 100 fly. In the 100 fly, Stotler cracked a 59.58, dipping under 1:00. She also swam a 2:01.60 200 free, and 2:15.68 200 IM, narrowly missing picking up a 2nd Wave II cut (2:15.28).

Aurora Roghair, Iowa Flyers 18-year-old, clocked 3 new Wave I cuts in women’s freestyle events. Roghair posted a 2:01.69 200 free, 4:14.70 400 free, and 16:48.56 in the 1500 free, hitting the Wave I cut in each.

AquaSol’s Patrick Sammon also picked up 3 new cuts, swimming a 23.00 50 free, 50.06 100 free, and 1:49.79 200 free, marking huge drops from his personal bests in all 3 events. Daniel Matheson, an 18-year-old out of Scottsdale Aquatic Club, also picked up 3 cuts, including a Wave II cut. Matheson swam a 15:33.69 in the 1500 free, taking 2 seconds off his personal best, and picking up the Wave II cut in the process. He also swam a 2:00.62 200 fly, and a 4:24.04 in the 400 IM, grabbing Wave I cuts in each.

Another notable performance came from Unattached California 18-year-old Kamal Muhammad, who dropped from 2:08.06 to 2:02.81 in the men’s 200 IM. With the swim, Muhammad went from being 4 seconds off the Wave I cut, straight to hitting the Wave II cut all in one meet.
