7x South Carolina HS Champs, Sydney and Maddie Baker, Commit to UNC

Sydney Baker and Maddie Baker, twin sisters from Duncan, South Carolina, have both made verbal commitments to the University of North Carolina Tar Heels for the 2017-18 season. The Bakers are seniors at Christ Church Episcopal High School in Greenville. They have a combined total of seven individual state titles over the three seasons of their high school careers.

The Baker twins swim year-round for Middle Tyger YMCA.

Sydney Baker

“I am so excited to be a part of the class of 2021 at UNC! I chose this school because of the excellent academics, awesome swim program, and the welcoming team! I can’t wait to spend the next four years as a Tarheel!” –Sydney Baker

Sydney is the South Carolina Class AAA record-holder in the 100 breast, an event she has won three years running. She has also been the 200 free champion in each of the last two years. In club swimming, Sydney won the 200 breast at 2016 YMCA Short Course National Championships.

Sydney’s best events:

  • 200y breast – 2:12.57
  • 100y breast – 1:02.14
  • 400y IM – 4:18.68
  • 200y IM – 2:01.03

Maddie Baker

“I chose UNC because of the great combination of wonderful academics and great swimming program. I can’t wait to be a Tarheel!” –Maddie Baker

Maddie has won the 200 IM at the North Carolina Class AAA Championships for the past two years. She was also runner-up in the 100 fly at the 2015 state meet.

Maddie’s top events are:

  • 200y fly – 2:00.92
  • 100m fly – 1:02.78
  • 200y IM – 2:05.24
  • 400y IM – 4:25.12

The Tar Heels are well into their recruiting season, and it’s been a great one. In addition the Baker twins, the following commits will all be in the University of North Carolina class of 2021.

I’m thinking they’re probably South Carolina HS Class AAA record holders, and not ‘North Carolina’ record holders, as Christ Church Episcopal is in Class AAA of SCHSL.
