Six-time Olympic medalist Ryan Murphy ramps up for his third Olympic Games in Paris. In this interview he unpack his training cycle since 2022 World Championships. As expected, Murphy took a very short break after 2023 World Championships to launch his Olympic grind. Now in his 11th season at Cal under head coach Dave Durden, Ryan details the evolution of change and what’s stayed the same.
Prediction Game? I’m waiting until later in the season, but, please, feel free to play!

Gold is definitely out of reach for him, with Ceccon and Kos in the game ( + Chinese). He is lucky that other strong contenders – like Kolesnikov or Rylov – are banned from the competition. But even with that given his age and recent performances the most we can expect that he will be a decent finalist in both events. The best chance is the relay – if he gets the relay spot against the other Americans – when US has quite a high probability to grab a bronz after China and Italy.
Relays maybe…..
Sink
Ryan Murphy is a top tier cornball and the biggest weak field merchant on the men’s side
Murphy is the 3rd fastest 100m LC backstroker in history.
from 2016 lmao.
the fact he’s stuck around this long consistently going 52 mid and 155s is kinda of sad for men’s backstroke (particularly the 200)
So longevity is a sin? Ledecky”s best times are also from many years ago. Is she also a “weak field merchant”?
And you’re wrong about sticking around at “52 mid”. He was 51.97 in 2022 and 52.02 in 2023 – not bad compared to his best of 51.85 in 2016.
If it was easy to ‘stick around this long consistently going 52 mid and 155s’ lost of people would be doing it… which they are not… because it hard… and admirable.
How about you drop your best 100 and 200 back times in the comments below so we can all have a good chuckle.
(fingers crossed that ‘Andrew’ is not a previous gold medal olympic backstroker 🙂
You can call it a “weak field merchant”, I’d call it being consistently one of the best backstrokers in the world for an entire decade and having that consistency pay off. And in 2016 specifically there was no weak field merchanting lol. That’s just called winning 3 gold medals and setting a WR.
As for whether he wins gold in 2024, I can see it in the 100 but yeah Kos all the way in the 200.
Another terribly misinformed Andrew comment
Classic
knew we’d get something “special” from Andrew upon seeing Murph in the headline
There does not seem to be any video content that goes with the Ryan Murphy.
Sorry. Didn’t mean to publish, but it’s live now (and Murph’s on the podium in Paris in the 100-200 back, just don’t know how high at this point in time…. Someone needs to nerd this up!)
