Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania’s Andrew Abruzzo has announced his verbal commitment to swim for the University of Georgia in the class of 2022. He’ll be joining Bradley Dunham, another verbal commit to the Bulldogs for the fall of 2018.

Abruzzo attends Germantown Academy and swims for Plymouth Whitemarsh Aquatics (PWAC) where he is coached by Dick Shoulberg and Caroline Boland. He made our list of top 20 boys in the high school class of 2018 as an honorable mention.
Abruzzo had an outstanding summer long course season. He won the 400/800/1500 freestyle events at 2017 FINA Junior World Swimming Championships and was named to the US National Team for the 2017-18 season. He achieved PBs in the LCM 400/800/1500 free, 200 fly, and 200 IM during the course of the summer. Last year he won the 400 free and was runner-up in the 800/1500 at Junior Pan Pacs.
Abruzzo’s short course yard times (15:06 in the mile, 1:45.5 in the 200 back, 1:46.5 in the 200 fly, 4:23.5 in the 500) are still a ways out of NCAA scoring, but he’ll be a key player if he can transfer over some long course times, though.

- 1500/1650 free: 15:06.48 / 15:06.67

- 200 IM: 2:06.30 / 1:50.33
- 400 IM: 4:23.20 / 3:51.30

If the Georgia coaches can translate his exuberance and enthusiasm for swimming into faster times, Andrew is going to score points for his team at NCAAs.
Right now, his 400 free time is about a 4:15 or 4:16 in the 500 free. His 1500 free time is about a 14:45 or so.
Huh? Do you mean his 400 free time converts to a 4:15 or 4:16 500 free and his 1500 time converts to a 14:45 1650? Conversions are dangerous to rely on. Long course meters and short course yards are different animals.
maybe a little bit different but all elite swimmers are elite short course and long course. he has never swum scy tapered and very rarely swam it at all…not even high school. i guarantee he will be fine short course..
Of course that’s true but those are pretty conservative conversions. If he’s going 15:06 in the 1500 it’s safe to say he is a lot faster than that in the 1650.
Abruzzo has not done high school swimming in over 2 years and his focus has been on LC training. Rumor has it he has never tapered for a SC meet. He’s a Shoulberg product.
Congratulations Andrew! It appears that AA has focused on LCM over the last 18-24 months otherwise he would surely be in the Top 5 of this class…

Huge pick up. One of the fastest risers out there. Not to often you get a current national teamer as an incoming freshman. If he hits his short course times the way he did this summer, watch out. Top 3 at NCAAs as a freshman 1650.
Currently takes a 14:22 to his 15:06. He looks to be a stronger LC swimmer which makes their system perfect for him.
