Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Hemet, California’s Mya Jackson is headed to California State University, Bakersfield to begin her collegiate career in the fall of 2019. She’ll suit up for the Roadrunners with fellow members of the class of 2023, Ellice Richman, Hannah Marsh, Lindsey Sohoel-Smith, Madison Gray, and Mikayla Popham.
“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to California State University, Bakersfield. It was such a pleasant experience when I stepped on campus. The team was so welcoming, it was such a wonderful surprise to see so many faces wanting to meet me when I came for an unofficial visit. They operated as a unit, a real family, it was so great. The coaches and team members were so open and honest and willing to answer all my questions. I can’t wait to be a roadrunner next year. I would like to thank my family and coaches for all their support in getting me to this point in my swim career.”
Jackson swam for Hemet’s West Valley High School and was CIF-Southern Section Division IV champion in both the 50 free and 100 free as a senior. Competing at the California state meet the following week, she came in 9th in the 50 and 19th in the 100. The previous season West Valley had been in Division III and Jackson finished fourth in the 50 and seventh in the 100 before going on to compete at the 2018 CIF State Championships. There, she came in 12th in the 50.
Specializing in sprint freestyle, Jackson has updated nearly all her best event times over the last year. She shaved .15 off her SCY 50 free and .79 off her 100 free at CIF Section Championships, then improved her LCM 50 free time by .32 at Clovis Sectionals.
Jackson will be a welcomed addition to the Roadrunners’ sprint group next season. Her 50/100 free times would have ranked second on the 2018-19 squad, behind Autumn D’Arcy. Both D’Arcy’s and Jackson’s best 50 times would have landed them in the A final of the 50 free at WAC Championships, but D’Arcy competed in the 100 free, 100 fly, and 100 breast instead. Jackson would have been a B finalist in the 100 free, an event where D’Arcy placed fourth. The two sprinters will overlap for three years.
SCY times:
- 50 free – 23.29
- 100 free – 51.02
LCM times:
- 50 free – 26.29
- 100 free – 58.34
