21 Spots Still Up For Grabs In Aberdeen

There were 21 spots still up for grabs on the final day of the last chance qualifier for the Scottish team competing at the Commonwealth Games.

The final day at the North District Grand Prix in Aberdeen started with the men’s 200 IM where 19 year old Mark Szaranek took the event in a time of 2:01.81. The time beat his previous lifetime best of 2:02.49, but was just off the qualifying standard of 2:01.36.

Hannah Miley took her third event of the competition winning the women’s 200 freestyle in a time of 2:00.79. With only Caitlin McClatchey having a place on team in the event there were still two spots up for grabs, but Miley was not able to add the event to her schedule for Glasgow missing the qualifying time of 1:59.09.

Ross Murdoch and Calum Tait finished first and second in the men’s 200 breaststroke. With both men already having secured two of the spots on the team, with the third being taken by Olympic silver medalist Michael Jamieson, the 200 breaststroke did not have as much significance as many of the other events.

Murdoch won the event in a time of 2:12.92 followed by Tait who posted a time of 2:15.57.

Murdoch also took the men’s 50 breaststroke posting a time of 28.01.

Raquel Matos, who took the 50 butterfly on Friday evening, won the women’s 100 butterfly posting a time of 1:00.42. Matos won the 50 butterfly on Friday evening missing the qualifying standard by 14 one-hundredths of a second, missed capturing one of the three spots available in the 100 missing the qualifying time of 59.53 by almost a second.

Robbie Renwick and Stephen Milne had a great race in the men’s 400 freestyle. Renwick took the event in a time of 3:53.51 followed by Milne who touched in a time of 3:54.08. Both men are already on the team for the event.

Miley took her second event of the evening and fourth event of the meet winning the 400 IM in a time of 4:40.21. She was followed by Camilla Hattersley who posted a time of 4:46.45, missing the qualifying time of 4:45.44 by just over a second. Although Hattersley missed securing a spot on the team in the event she is already set to swim the 800 freestyle in Glasgow.

Sian Harkin won the women’s 50 freestyle in a time of 25.31. Harkin has already made the team in the event.

Eloise Barber and Rachel Masson battled for the silver in the event, with Barber posting a 25.93 with Masson finishing in a time of 25.97. Both women fell just short of the qualifying standard of 25.83.

Charlie Boldison took the men’s 100 backstroke in a time of 55.80, missing the qualifying time of 55.09 failing to make one of the three remaining spots in the event.

Chelsea Lawson was able to prevent Miley from winning her third event of the evening winning the women’s 200 backstroke in a time of 2:14.70. Miley finished second in a time of 2:15.33. Both fell short of the qualifying time of 2:12.08.

Brendan Hyland of Ireland took the men’s 200 butterfly in a time of 2:00.03, finishing almost six seconds ahead of the next competitor.

Commonwealth Games teammates Corrie Scott and Kathryn Johnstone finished first and second in the women’s 100 breaststroke. Scott won the event in a time of 1:09.89 followed by Johnstone who posted a 1:11.64.
