The second night of the 2024 YMCA Summer National Championship featured some great races in the 400 IM, 50 back, 100 fly, and 400 free relay, with swimmers from the Greater Somerset County YMCA claiming 3 of 4 events on the girl’s side.
17-year-old Erica Maltsev kicked-off the session with a big victory in the girl’s 400 IM. In the race, Maltsev knocked over 6 seconds off of her personal best of 4:59.88 with the Greater Somerset YMCA swimmer posting a final time of 4:53.72. Greater Spartanburg YMCA’s Hayden Penny had a strong performance for second in the event, with the University of Kentucky commit knocking a second and a half off of her personal best with a final time of 4:57.89.
After finishing 2nd to Penny in the 200 backstroke on night 2, Upper Main Line YMCA’s Devyn Sargent posted a win in the girl’s 50 backstroke, cranking out a time of 29.45 for the win. In the boy’s event, 16-year-old Connor Johnson claimed the win in a time of 25.89, dropping almost a second off of his personal best (26.72).
Stanford commit Emily Thompson ended the girl’s 100 fly with a victory, swimming a time of 1:00.41 for the win. Thompson, who swims for the Greater Somerset County YMCA, was just slightly off of her best time of 59.93 with her performance. 16-year-old Anna Kilponen chipped nearly a second off of her best time to post a 1:01.14 for a runner-up finish. Despite adding a half second from his prelims performance where he clipped his best time by 1.5 seconds, Jimmy Beeson still managed to hold on for a win in the boy’s 100 fly. Beeson, from the Greater Somerset County YMCA, swam a time of 55.40 in the race, just holding off Roman Torres (55.49).
Lakeland Hills Family YMCA’s Owen Markowitz maintained his top seed in the 400 IM, swimming the top times through both prelims and finals. In finals, Markowitz posted a time of 4:29.77 with the Duke commit besting the field by almost 3 seconds.
In the girl’s 400 freestyle relay, the team from Greater Somerset County YMCA claimed the win as Colleen Bull, Victoria Castro, Maltsev, and Thompson combined for a time of 3:50.62 to lead the field by over 3 seconds. The Ridley Area YMCA team of Shane Eckler, Tristan Ronayne, Jonathan Hoole, and Jake Kennedy won the boy’s event, dropping a time of 3:26.91.
