We combed through the just-published heat sheets released for all 8 days of swimming action at the 2024 Olympic Games  and compared them to the original entry lists for discrepancies.

There were just a handful of athletes who wound up dropping events, keeping most of the prelims sessions’ original lineups intact.

NOTABLE EVENT DROPS

• Yu Yiting (CHN), women’s 100 fly – The 100m fly represented one of two events in which 18-year-old Yiting of China was originally entered. Her entry time of 56.82 in the 1fly was a time she produced at April’s Chinese National Championships to become China’s 5th-fastest performer in history. Her departure means that Zhang Yufei, silver medalist in the event from Tokyo, will be the sole Chinese representative.
• Simona Quadarella (ITA), women’s 400 free – 25-year-old Quadarella dropped the 400m free in favor of keeping just the 800m and 1500m, the former of which she won bronze in Tokyo. Quadarella carried an entry time of 4:05.83 in the 4free, a mark well off the 4:02-range which is the threshold under which the top 8 prospects all reside.
• Mary-Sophie Harvey (CAN), women’s 400 free – Harvey’s entry time of 4:07.70 was logged at this year’s Sette Colli Trophy just last month. That cleared the Olympic Qualification Time to join teammate Summer McIntosh who already qualified in this event at Trials. However, Harvey has decided to stick with just the 200m free where she ranks as the 7th-seeded athlete.
• Kim Woomin (KOR), men’s 800m/1500m free – 2024 world champion Kim is going all-in on the 400m free, opting out of his original 800m and 1500m free entries. The reduction in events also keeps Kim less worked to strike hard in the 4x200m free relay where Korea will try to follow-up on their silver medal from Doha. With Kim’s absence in these 2 distance events, he’s now rendered ineligible to race the 10k open water.
• Liu Yaxin (CHN), women’s 200m back – The other Chinese woman to alter her original event lineup is Liu Yaxin. 25-year-old Liu was entered in the 200m back along with her 400m free, but will race just the latter in Paris. Her time of 2:08.18 in the 200m back ranked her 9th among the competitors. Teammate Peng Xuwei will be the sole competitor from the nation now in the 200m back.
• Pan Zhanle (CHN), men’s 50m free – Finally, world record holder in the 100m free, Pan Zhanle of China, has decided to drop the splash n’ dash from his lineup. Pan is his nation’s 3rd-fastest performer in history in the 50m free, courtesy of the 21.92 he produced at last year’s Asian Games. However, the top-tier performers in the 50m are in the 21-low zone, meaning the 19-year-old would need to hack nearly a second off to challenge for a medal. Pan remains in the 100m and 200m free races.
