This week’s U.S. National Championships also serves as a selection meet for four different international teams: the World Aquatics Championships, World Junior Aquatic Championships, the Pan American Games, and the LEN U-23 Championships.
With so many spots on international teams on the line, we’re doing our best this week to to provide daily updates of how those rosters appear to be shaping up. You can read more about the selection procedures here.
Another 11 men and women secured Worlds roster spots last night, with several other swimmers potentially qualifying for the team, depending on whether or not the US bumps up agains the 26 swimmers-per-gender roster cap.
The women’s team is looking better in that regard than the men, as four swimmers tonight secured a spot in a second event: Regan Smith (200 back), Kate Douglass (200 breast), Gretchen Walsh (50 fly), and Katie Ledecky. Meanwhile, Destin Lasco became the first man to earn a swim in a second event after taking 2nd in the 200 back.

Here’s our current assessment of how all four US rosters appear to be shaking up after day two. There’s a lot of nuances to the selection criteria, and it’s quite possible we’ve made a mistake somewhere in here. If we have, kindly let us know in the comments.
How do they determine age for World Juniors and the U23 LEN meet?
Age as of January 1?
Age as of qualifying?
Age as of event at meet qualified for?
Age as of first day of meet qualified for?
I ask specifically as to Jonny kulow. My understanding is that he was still 18 (new NAG Record) as of Tuesday of this week when he was 10th in the 100 Free with the fastest time and highest placement of any 18 & Un. And he’s not listed for World Juniors.or Un23.
For both meets, it’s their age as of December 31. So, while he’s currently 18 and eligible for NAG records, he’s not eligible for Junior Worlds. He is eligible for the LEN U23, and it looks like Kulow should still end up with a chance of swimming there; the projected rosters in flux as the Worlds roster changes.
Not worried at all for the men.
The garuntees (basically)
– Armstrong in the sprint backstrokes
– Kalisz in the IMs
– fink in the sprint breaststrokes
That leaves three roster spots open
50 free – already on: MA/King/Alexy/Guiliano/Held
– factors: Dressel/Curry/Curtiss
400 free – already on: Smith/Mitchell/Hobson
– factors: Magahey/Dant
800 free – already on: Finke/Clark
– factors: Johnston/Brinegar/Gallant
50/100 back – already on: Ress/Murphy
– Factors: ARMSTRONG/Casas/Diehl
200 IM – already on: Foster/Smith
– FACTORS: KALISZ/casas
400 IM – already on: Foster/Finke
– Factors: KALISZ/Litherland
50/100 breast – already on: MA/Matheny
– Factors: FINK/miller
100 fly – already on: MA/Heilman
– Factors: Dressel/Rose/Casas

The men’s doubling is definitely the most interesting thing the rest of the way regarding the Worlds roster. Only being able to add 6 swimmers for the rest of the meet may be impossible. Kalisz likely to go in one of the IMs, Fink or insert other 100 breast threat to go. Armstrong a threat, Rose a threat, Diehl a threat, Curtiss a threat, Dressel a threat.
If you’re a Ress or McFadden fan you’re rooting for Thomas Heilman, Charlie Clark, Jake Mitchell, Matt King, and Ryan Held the rest of the way, I reckon.
Men will certainly be crunching numbers going into the meet. Another (potential) problem could arise with the limitation of 12 swimmers that are relay-only. Lasco and Walsh are no longer relay-only via their swims yesterday, but you’ve got 14 swimmers currently that are. So the rest of the way for this to not be an issue, you need:
a. Huske to take a 100 fly spot
b. Sims, Smith, or Gemmell to take a 400 free spot
c. King, Held, or Ress to take a 50 free spot
d. Mitchell to take a 400 free spot
e. Ress to win the 50 back
If two of the above five options happen, then there will be 12… Read more »
If Ledecky drops the 200 free would that lead to Sims no longer being considered relay only? Not sure when all of those decisions are made.
Do we know if Annie would even go to Pan Ams?
Also is this list taking into account that any juniors eligible swimmers, like Bella, wouldn’t be able to actually go since they are in a guaranteed worlds spot as a top 4 relay swimmer
Not sure about your first question, but yes to question number two. Just an oversight on my part. I think it’s fixed now, although it may take the spreadsheet a little bit to sync.
Men are already up to 20 without Fink, Chase, Shane or Hunter even on the team yet…and MA still not guaranteed a spot yet. So many others, including Dressel and Diehl (100 back maybe), Rose/Albiero/Julian (1Fly) or even Cody in breast could cause a major numbers crunch. This will get very interesting. Priority 4’s and 5’s may be in jeopardy of missing out on Worlds….would be disappointing if any priority 3’s miss out.
MA isn’t guaranteed a spot by virtue of his 50 fly win?
no, i believe it’s the lowest priority behind the 6th place finishers in the 100 and 200 freestyle races
wow i didnt know that..
Wow, not much space left. Looks like there are plausible scenarios that could shut out all the priority 4/5 and even some of priority 3. In addition to those you mention, top 2 for Magahey in 400, Johnston in 800, Curry or Curtiss throwing down a big 50, MA getting top 2 in exactly one but not multiple Oly events. Very unlikely all those things will happen, but who knows the way this meet has been going.
When does the roster for Worlds have to be submitted? and can any substitutions be made leading up to the events?
I can’t find the exact date in the selection criteria, but to answer your second question, yes, with some caveats. Pages 17-19 go through all the details: https://www.usaswimming.org/docs/default-source/national-teamdocuments/selections/2023-world-championships-athlete-selection-procedures.pdf
Do the open water swimmers count toward the 26? Hypothetically, if Grimes doesn’t qualify in the pool, and there’s a roster crunch that leaves a couple relay people home, would she be eligible to swim on the prelims 800 free relay since she’s already on the open water team?
I’m fairly certain that should would have to be listed the pool roster to eligible for a relay. She may also be ineligible for Junior World since she’s already on the open water team; will try to run that down.
