Today is the third day of racing at the 2022 Speedo Winter Junior Championships in Austin, Texas. This morning’s events will include the prelims of the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back.
We will see both Bella Sims and Maximus Williamson get another shot at the 200 free after putting up incredible performances at Wednesday’s relay session. Sims clocked the fastest 200 freestyle since 2019, while Williamson broke Drew Kibler‘s 15-16 NAG in the event.
Katie Grimes and Williamson come in as the top seeds and the meet record holders in the 400 IM. Both are less than a second off of the 15-16 NAGs, making the 400 IM a race to keep an eye on today.
The boys’ 200 free should also be a good race, as Rex Maurer is having a great meet so far and comes in seeded 2nd behind Williamson. Maurer clocked the 2nd-fastest time ever in the 17-18 age group last night in the 500 with a 4:12.33.

Maximus Williamson is just 0.02 behind Jones with a 47.56. His personal best in the event is the fastest of the heat at a 47.14, and he should be closer to or faster than that this evening.
Rounding out the top 8 is Nitro’s Jeremy Kelly, who had a big drop this morning. He shaved off over a second and a half from his previous best to record a 48.09.
I overheard Sidney at the podiatrist yesterday saying that Williamson’s top choice as of now is Case Western Reserve University!!!? He reportedly “values academics as well as athletics”, and wants to lead a new wave of swimmers drawn to the more lowkey but also underratedly competitive aspect of divison 3 sports. We have reached out to head coach Emil LaSida for comment, but he was vague, saying “Well gosh darn diggity, I wouldn’t want to spoil any surprise now would I”. Stay tuned for more spartan news
Rumor has it that Williamson was awed by the “dungeon-like” atmosphere of the Veale Athletic Center pool. Sources close to him say that Maximus values “grinding in silence”, and the lack of windows in the Veale pool keep out the press and any so-called “haters”, as the youth say these days. Though Eddie Reece will surely make a strong push, I’d keep an eye out for Case as a “sleeper-pick” when this youngster makes his college decision!
Ian Pickles is an EXCELLENT name
Is Kayla Han’s best time really 4:06 in the 4IM? Wouldn’t that make her the NAG record holder?
She went 4:06 last month so I don’t think the NAG has been updated yet.
Wow, didn’t realize Katie Anderson was married at age 14. I thought she was still Katie Hoff then. Crazy.
Wut
Doesn’t Jacoby hold the 17/18 NAG record?
Shouldn’t Jacoby 57.54 be the NAG?
I think Phelps’ NAG is going down in the 15/16 400 IM tonight.
His last SCY record, poof.
What did you just call me?!
Sandpipers’ women could make a top 5 Women’s NCAA team.
Someone should score out NCAA’s with Sandpipers vs.
Just because I was actually curious, using best times compared to 2022 NCAAs:
800 Free Relay (2nd) ~ 34 points
Sims: 500 Free (1st), 200 IM (3rd), 200 Free (1st) ~ 56 points
Grimes: 500 Free (2nd), 400 IM (2nd), Mile (1st) ~ 53 points
Weinstein: 500 Free (3rd), 200 Free (13th), Mile (6th) ~ 33 points
My point total, give or take, comes out to about 176.
Good enough for 9th place.
Crazy when you actually think about it.
Nope. Only one scoring relay. Maybe top 8
Let’s give Grimes and Sims 108 points. 800 free relay 34 points. And let’s say Weinstein wins the mile and 3rd in 500. 178 points. Cal was 8th with 180 last year.
