Coming into the last day of the 2022 U.S. International Team trials, there is a significant amount of scratches in the 200 IM, 50 free, 800 free, and 1500 free. This comes as no surprise, as most swimmers have already had to go through multiple events on the first four days of the meet, with their fates in regards to international team qualification almost sealed.
The most surprising scratch comes from Sierra Schmidt, who is the #3 seed in the 1500 free- the only event that she was entered in. With Schmidt gone, a solid 40 seconds separate #2 seed Katie Grimes and new #3 seed Bella Sims‘s entry times, making Grimes an even clearer favorite to take second in this event behind Katie Ledecky.
Update: We have received confirmation from Schmidt that she will, in fact, be swimming the 1500 free tomorrow. She stated that there was an admin error in the heat sheet that made it seem like she scratched the 1500 free when she really did not.
A lieu of high-profile scratches come in the men’s and women’s 200 IM. On the men’s side, #1 seed Michael Andrew scratched to focus on the 50 free, although this was expected because he told SwimSwam earlier that he did not plan on focusing on the 200 IM this year.
Torri Huske, the #3 seed in the 200 IM, has scratched to focus on the 50 free. However, Kate Douglass, who is also entered in both the 200 IM and 50 free, is still set to swim both events for now. It will be interesting to see if Douglass chooses to do the double or not, and if she will have to decide between the event that she won Olympic bronze in and the event that she broke the short course yards NCAA record in. #8 seed Justina Kozan has also scratched the 200 IM, which is perhaps her best event.
Top-ten seeds Linnea Mack and Zach Apple both scratched their respective 50 free races. Apple, a Tokyo Olympian, failed to qualify for Budapest in the 100 and 200 free, and his scratch means that he is officially out of contention for the worlds team.

The last 50 of the 200 IM final at olympics will be sometbing MA never comes back from. Doubt we see him in this event again on big stage
Grimes may have been seeded 19th in the 200 individual medley but that’s a joke number. She would have been very competitive. I’m sick that she’s not swimming the race, although it is certainly understandable given Walsh/Douglass/1500. Eventually she’ll learn not to sink to the bottom of the pool on breaststroke.
Seriously, what is Curzan’s breaststroke like? Would love to see that!
You will probably get a chance to see it during her Collegiate SCY season
Whenever a swimmer says they’ve entered an event but not sure they’ll swim it, it just means they’re not gonna swim it.

Wondering if anyone knows if Simone Manuel is still planning on competing? Haven’t heard her mentioned? And is Nathan Adrian retired?
Simone’s status is a great mystery.
Nathan is still in the testing pool (at least he was recently), which implies that he has not filed his retirement paperwork, but his focus does seem to be on his swim club/swim school at the moment.

Just realized now that it is pretty…bold?…for MA to sorta just take a year off on focusing on the 2 IM, given it’s his one race that has a massive, glaringly obvious weakness.
I know I know there’s a while until Paris to iron it out and there are stroke 50s on offer this year and all, but it seems like putting the 2 IM on pause might be something they regret later.
Maybe or maybe not. Realistically, his potential Olympic events are the 50 free, 100 breast, 100 fly and 200IM. If he wants to swim all the 50s, which seems to be something he does want, the 2IM is the obvious outlier as the only non-sprint event.
If he picks the 2IM back up later in the year I’m sure it won’t be like he can’t catch back up by Paris.
..maybe he’s spending more time working on that glaringly obvious issue, which would really still be working on the IM? Also training all four strokes, so it’s not like he’s completely ignoring it.
Makes sense but bummer. Curious how often #1 seed in anything scratches
