For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, “Mid” to swimmers in the B final and “Down” to swimmers in the C final.

NC State had a phenomenal showing during the opening prelim session of the 2022 ACC Championships, putting a combined 21 swimmers into ‘A’ finals over the course of just six events. A lot of those ‘ups’ came in the bottom half of the top eight, but in the morning it’s all about getting a lane in that ‘A’ final.
On the women’s side, the Wolfpack outpaced Virginia with nine swimmers advancing to ‘A’ finals, including claiming half of the available spots in the 200 IM and three in the 500 free. NC State took spots fifth through eighth in the 200 IM and sixth through eighth in the 500 free, so we’ll see if they can have some swimmers move up tonight.
While they were mostly low spots in those A-Finals (6-7-8 in the 500 free, 5-6-7-8 in the 200 IM, 6 in the 50 free), that means they have a lot more room to move up than do the Cavaliers.
If we score out the prelim session, the Wolfpack outpace the Cavaliers by 9.5 points, though we’ve also got the 200 free relay and diving on the docket tonight that’s not taken into account. If seeds hold, Virginia would still hold a narrow lead, pending results of diving and the relay.
If the NC State women had a good morning, the men’s team had a GREAT morning with an astounding 12 swimmers advancing into ‘A’ finals.
The Wolfpack put four men into the championship heat of the 500 free, including the top three, five into the 200 IM and three into the 50 free, including the top time with a bullet from freshman David Curtiss.
Reigning conference champion Lousiville had a relatively poor showing, going 2/6/3, while UVA, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech all showed good form early on.

Virginia didn’t swim-off the 50 free, with a coach’s decision bumping Matt King into the A final and Jack Aikins into the B Final. The above table has been updated to reflect that result.

Andrew, thank you for running the numbers!
Andrew, why did you forget to include the Pitt Panthers in the Men’s ups and downs?????
All the top NC State male freshmen are firing. Bustos, Hoover, Curtiss. That’s not too common, let’s see if Hayes is on as well.
Yep
Hayes added 0.4 in his 50 this morning.. disappointing
I believe UVA are 4/3/6 as they had two tie for 8th in 50 so one will go to B final.
Maybe I’m missing something but at least some of the combined day 1 plus projected prelim scores don’t add up. Also, if UVA had a 15 point lead after day 1 and are projected to be outscored by 10 tonight (not including the relay), wouldn’t the combined projected score have them up by 5?
Good math Greg
Nope you’re right. The program we use to score these had missed that diving was put in the prelims session on the live results yesterday. It’s been updated above.
