2021 Florida HS 1A Roundup: Regions Highlights and State Qualifiers

2021 FHSAA 1A Region Championships

While the Class 3A and 4A Florida high schools completed their respective District Championships on Saturday, the 1A and 2A teams were wrapping up their Region meets—the second of three stages of the FHSAA championship season.

  • Region 1: Bolles (Jacksonville) girls, Bolles (Jacksonville) boys
  • Region 2: Holy Names (Tampa) girls, Out-of-Door Academy boys
  • Region 3: Montverde Academy girls, Edgewood (Merritt Island) boys
  • Region 4: Saint Andrew’s (Boca Raton) girls, Saint Andrew’s (Boca Raton) boys

CLASS 1A REGION HIGHLIGHTS

There was a plethora of top-tier performances at the 1A Region meets, several of them coming at the Region 1 meet from the Bolles School team.

The Bolles girls and boys both won the Region 1 meet in decisive fashion. On the girls’ side, Manita Sathianchokwisan was a top performer, winning the 50 free in a new Bolles record of 22.63 while also winning the 100 free in 50.31—both ‘A’ cuts. Megan McGrath was also strong for the Bolles girls, putting up the fastest time of the entire Class 1A in the 200 free (1:49.40) and winning the Region 1 100 fly (55.50).

The Bolles boys were led by Andres Dupont Cabrera, who sizzled to the top times of the class in the 100 free (44.43) and 200 free (1:37.73), both ‘A’ cuts, plus the top time in the 50 free (20.32) from a relay lead-off leg.

Miguel Rojas Newman (100 fly–48.79), Kayden Lancaster (500 free–4:33.44) and William Heck (100 breast–55.26) also posted the top times of the class at the Region 1 meet for Bolles.

Among the top performers at Region 2 was Berkeley Prep senior Tyler Roberton, who put up the top 50 free time for boys individually in the class at 20.68. The Berkeley Prep boys ended up finishing just 11 points shy of Out-of-Door Academy for first place.

Some quick swims came out of Region 4, headlined by South Florida Heat’s Erika Pelaez and The King’s Academy’s Josh Zuchowski.

Pelaez put up the top time of the class in the girls’ 100 backstroke in 54.11, edging Saint Andrew’s Aspen Gersper (54.66) at Region 4, and also won the 50 free with the second-fastest overall time in 23.02.

Zuchowski posted the top time of the class in the boys’ 200 IM (1:49.11) and 100 backstroke (49.87).

The Class 1A State Championships will run on November 6.
