Class 3A Region Highlights

The Lawton Chiles girls team won the Region 1 meet as they look to repeat as state champions for the second year in a row. The team is led by junior Lydia Hanlon, who is the top seed in both of her events going into the state championship meet. Hanlon won both of her events at the Region 1 meet easily, posting a time of 55.61 in the 100 fly and 56.15 in the 100 fly. She was also on the Lawton Chiles 200 free relay that took 1st in the region, finishing with a time of 1:37.95. That relay is seeded second for the state meet.

For the Lawton Chiles boys, they will be led by Stanford commit Hayden Kwan at the state championship meet. Kwan took first in both the 200 IM (1:52.41) and 100 back (49.78) at the Region meet. He is the top seed in both going into the state championship.

Also coming out of Region 1 is the top seed in the girls 100 breast, junior Emma Wortman. Wortmann took 2nd in the 100 fly (57.72) and 1st in the 100 breast (1:03.42) at the Region 1 meet. She is the top seed in the 100 breast by almost two seconds.

Highlighting the Region 3 girls champions Fort Myers was senior University of Texas commit Olivia McMurray. McMurray took 1st in both the 200 IM (2:04.49) and 500 free (4:55.93). Her race in the 500 came down to the wire, as Vanderbilt commit Mercedes Traba finished just .51 behind her, taking 2nd in 4:56.44. The two seniors will be the top seeds in the event going into the state championships.

Of last year’s state champions and runner-ups, the only team to win their Region meet this year was the Lawton Chiles girls, who beat out second-place Fleming Island by a score of 351 to 315.5.
