We are now in the thick of the 2019 World Championships, and to make sure you’re up to speed with all the action, we’re giving you a video recap of what we think of the racing. This is Pancake Hot Take, where we rate the overall racing of every Finals Session on a scale of 1-5 pancakes, and give you our highlights from each night.
Although Day 8 started out a little sluggish in terms of times, it ended with such a rush, giving us 2 amazing races back-to-back, including 2 world records in the final heat of the competition. For that, I think Day 5 deserves…
5 PANCAKES!!!
Let’s get into it.
- Race of the Day: Women’s 400 medley relay. Regan Smith crushes the 100 back world record on the lead-off going 57.57, then Lilly King, Kelsi Dahlia, and Simone Manuel follow suit, Manuel and Dahlia dropping lifetime-best splits, to decimate the world record by 1.15 seconds in 3:50.40.
- Surprise of the Day: Men’s 400 medley relay. The US looked in control with 100 meters to go, but Duncan Scott had other plans, throwing down a 46.14 anchor split to pass by Nathan Adrian and reap gold for Great Britain, marking the first time in history since the 400 medley relay became an event that the US has lost in a head-to-head battle.
- Syrup on Top: Simone Manuel winning the 50 free in 24.05. The time isn’t her best, but it makes a clean sweep for Manuel in the 50-100, marking the first time she’s ever done that in international competition. It also leaves her with 7 medals, the most any woman has ever won at a world championships.

Just my observation Rowdy, but there’s no such phenomenon as “drafting off the lane lines”. They’re static objects and create no draft, pull, current or electromagnetic voodoo. Lane lines are there to tell you where not to be.

Regan Smith will be the most dominant female swimmer in the USA in the next year, even more than Missy in 2011-2012.
Do you think she should seize this opportunity to turn pro use the money to pay for college and retirement funds or do you think she should remain amateur and losing all those opportunity?
Positive if you believe turning pro is the better option
Negative if you think she needs to remain amateur
She should do whatever makes her happy. If that’s finish high school, go to the Olympics, and then go to college, great. If that’s finish high school, turn pro, and go to the Olympics, also great. I couldn’t knock anyone for wanting to swim in college (even if just for a couple of years). You can’t buy those memories and experiences later. We all need money to get through life, but as I’ve aged, I’ve realized the memories and experiences of my life are more important than every dollar I’ve chased.
Are you saying that we can only gain memories and experiences by swimming in NCAA?
Now I feel inadequate with my own memories and experiences.
Nope. We’re all ourselves. We all value different things. I don’t know what Regan or her family value – that’s for them to decide.
Exactly. Therefore I didn’t understand that you needed to imply in your original comment that memories and experiences can only be gained through swimming college.
I didn’t write that. You read that. That’s on you.
What I did write is this – if she values swimming in college, she gets one crack at that, and it (at least for now) cannot happen after she turns pro. College swimming comes with a unique set of experiences. If she wants or values those, she has one choice. If not, she has another choice. Every swimmer does not get this choice – she has it.

I seriously think the Chinese Army’s IT department is hitting back at SwimSwam for all the disparaging comments made against Sun Yang this week.
Regan’s FIRST PRO ENDORSEMENT will come from Heinz 57 because of her new World Record of 57.57! Did you know that in 1941 Joe DiMaggio was mad that his continuous streak of games with a hit was snapped at 56 because he had deal on the table with Heinz if his streak made it to 57? Ad guys take this stuff seriously!
