2019 USports Rookie of the Year Rebecca Smith Will Swim for Calgary Next Season

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

A post-Olympic transfer will shake up the USports landscape next season. Tokyo 2020 Olympian Rebecca Smith, a former swimmer at the University of Toronto, will return to her home province next fall and swim for the University of Calgary Dinos.

“We are very excited to have Rebecca joining the Dinos after her performances at the Tokyo Olympics,” said Dinos swimming head coach Mike Blondal. “We are looking forward to being part of her swimming career as she resumes her education after this extended run at the Olympics and representing Canada.”

Smith, who is a native of Red Deer, Alberta, moved to Toronto for her final two seasons of high school swimming. She ultimately enrolled at the University of Toronto where she competed in one varsity season in 2018-2019.

At the 2019 USports Championships, her only to date, she was named the female rookie of the year after winning the 50 fly, 100 fly, and 200 fly. The Toronto women finished 3rd at that year’s USports championships, as they have in each of the past 3 editions.

The 21-year old Smith has become a regular contributor on Canada’s relays internationally. Between the 2015 and 2017 World Junior Swimming Championships, she won a trio of medals, including gold in the 800 free relay in 2017. She also won Pan Pacific bronze medals as a member of both free relays in 2018, and senior World Championship bronze medals in the 400 free, 800 free, and 400 medley relays. Those added to a 2017 mixed medley relay bronze.

Smith was a prelims-only swimmer on all three of those relays at the 2019 World Championships, where she served as an apt replacement to push the relays through to finals.

She’ll at least be in the conversation for finals swims in Tokyo on the two free relays after swimming best times of 54.44 in the 100 free and 1:57.43 in the 200 free in the early-May time trial events in Toronto.

Rebecca Smith‘s Best Times in LCM/SCM:

LCM SCM
50 free 25.46 24.8
100 free 54.44 52.93
200 free 1:57.43 1:52.92
50 fly 26.22 26.14
100 fly 57.59 56.55
200 IM 2:14.73 2:10.23

The Dinos finished 3rd at the last USports championships in 2020 before the 2021 championships were canceled. In both 2018 and 2019, the Calgary women were 4th.

The 2021 Canada West Swimming Championships will be hosted by the University of Alberta from Nov. 26-28, while Université Laval will welcome the country’s best to the 2022 U SPORTS Swimming Championships on Feb. 25-27.

Did Calgary get anyone on the Olympic team this year?

Nope.

Cole Pratt is the only Calgarian, and he’s swimming for Cascade.

Seems like Peter Brothers and Tristan Cote were the only ones with a real shot.
