With the first day of the 2017 USA Nationals/World Championships Trials meet in the books, we can take an initial look at how the men’s and women’s rosters for next month’s World Championships are beginning to look. You can get a full refresher on the selection process here, and we’ll try to talk you through the process as we show you the roster.
Through the first day, we have six men and six women guaranteed roster spots, with another three women and four men whose spots are tentative until there are enough “double” to make sure no more than 26 swimmers qualify for each gender.

Might be time for SwimSwam to update Finke’s profile?
Considering that the doubles might be less than last year could some of the 5th and 6th of 100/200 be left out?
Rafael – it’s very, very unlikely. But mathematically it is possible.
Worrell is one of the swimmers who got me smile as well .
I am happiest for Jack Conger.
That 200 fly was a nail-biter. He was out in lane 7, and likely couldn’t see that it was going to come down to the touch.
it was very happy for his win as well . What a clutch swim that was
Exciting, but mixed first day. US huge players for medals in M200fl, W100/800fr, M100fr and both relays. But, really pretty poor W200fl & M1500fr. US will do well to get a finallist, probably Flickinger, in those two events combined. Good first day.
Not really that disappointing considering that the U.S. hasn’t been strong in women’s 200 fly and men’s 1500 free in years.
connor jaeger….you may have heard of him…silver medalist at the 2016 games?
Jake was probably not watching swimming in those areas …..like the 1500
Right, because 2nd and 4th in Rio is “not very strong.” The 1500 was USA’s 5th best individual male event behind the 50 free, 100 back, 200 back, and 200 IM, all of which had a first place American finisher. And before people jump on me because those two aren’t swimming the 1500 this year, lets not forget that three of USA’s top milers choose not to swim tonight (Wilimovsky, Grothe, and Smith).
And three of them did – Sweetser, Finke, and Ransford. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that the top 2 finishers tonight are teenagers (19 and 17 respectively). Finke has another year of high school and his time ranks 3rd all-time for 17-18 age group. Of the three you mention, only Wilimovsky has posted a faster time than Sweetser and Finke, not to mention tonight’s 4th place swimmer Andrew Abruzzo also 17. While they might not medal at World’s this year, I’d say the future of US distance swimming is pretty solid.
Oh trust me I haven’t. I love how well contested the mile was this year. Usually we might be able to predict an easy winner but this year (and at NCAA’s) the guys really gave us a show all dropping best times. Definitely a solid future, I only wanted to show that it was an event which we had been strong in over the past year.
After World Trials, you should do an article comparing this meet to last years Olympic trials. (differences in roster, times, etc.)
Good day 1. Happy with results
Is Robert Finke related to summer and autumn Finke?
He is. Younger brother.
Impressive
