On the same day that the 2017 FINA World Championships concluded in Budapest, British athletes from across the region competed on the final day of the British Summer Championships in Sheffield. Several records fell and personal bests clocked across all age groups, giving the world a glimpse into the talent ready to join the likes of James Guy, Duncan Scott, Adam Peaty and Hannah Miley on the world stage someday.

Stockport Metro’s Katie Matts is one of those up-and-coming swimmers, having claimed her 3rd 19+ senior national title at Ponds Forge this week. After already claiming gold in the 400m IM and 200m breaststroke, Matts fired off a new lifetime best mark of 2:13.24 in the 200m IM to top the podium. Her outing represents the first time the swimmer had ever dipped under the 2:14 threshold in the event.

18-year-old Georgia Coates was another multiple event winner, tacking the 200m IM victory of for the 17/18 age group on to her 3 golds from earlier in the meet. In the 2IM, the Rio Olympian touched in 2:14.44 to beat the field by more than 2 solid seconds.

Newcastle’s Emily Large also made her presence known over the course of the meet, sweeping the butterfly events with class. The 16-year-old completed her trifecta on the final day with the 100m victory in 59.09 crushing her previous personal best of 59.54 from the British National Championships in April.

Northampton’s Edward Mildred (14) scored his 7th title of the meet in the 13/14 age group category cruising to a 200m free victory in 1:58.36, the only swimmer in his age group to crack 2 minutes. He also finished out his competition with a new pb in the 50m fly, winning in 26.58. In total, Mildred won an astounding 7 golds across the 50/100/200/400 freestyle and 50/100/200 fly.

Ned Sharp lowered the boys’ British age group record for 50m fly in the 13/14 age group, knocking the previous mark of 26.80 all the way down to 26.22. Jarvis Parkinson also broke a record by establishing a new English age group 200m IM time of 1:59.71 for the 17/18 age category.

Para swimmer Jessica-Jane Applegate wowed the Sheffield crowd with a new S14 100m fly world record. The UEA Norwich athlete beat the previous record by a comfortable .17, bringing the old mark of 1:04.63 down to 1:04.46. This represented the 3rd para swimming world record to bite the dust here at Ponds Forge with Ollie Hynd and Tom Hamer getting the job done on night 1.
