The final prelims session of the 2016 U.S. Winter Junior Championships (East) saw Riptide Swim Team’s Regan Smith set herself up as the top seed in the 200 back. Smith clocked a 1:54.65 to lead prelims, making her the 6th fastest 13-14 performer of all time. She’s also slated to swim the 200 fly tonight, taking 4th seed with a 1:57.47. She’ll be going after Cassidy Bayer’s 13-14 NAG Record of 1:56.01 tonight. Topping the field in prelims was Iowa Flyers Swim Club’s Ruby Martin with a speedy 1:56.94.
Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s Ryan Hoffer picked up top seed in the men’s 100 free with a 43.42 this morning. His finals swim is highly anticipated, as we wait to see what he has in store after throwing down a 41.23 at this meet last year. Also swimming sub-44 this morning was Alexei Sancov, who picked up 2nd with a 43.91.
Pikes Peaks Athletics’ Daniel Carr put up a strong double this morning, starting with his 1:42.73 swim in the 200 back to take top seed for finals. That put him over 2 seconds ahead of anyone else, as Noah Henry was 2nd in 1:44.99. Carr then qualified for the 100 free final with a 44.98 for 7th place.
Additional Top Seeds:
- Women’s 100 free- Julia Cook, 48.71
- Women’s 200 breast- Grace Zhao, 2:09.86
- Men’s 200 breast- Daniel Roy, 1:57.39
- Men’s 200 fly- Andrew Koustik, 1:45.04
Can’t see hoffer breaking 41.23 yet. But a 41 at this meet is likely
What is the deal with Albert Gwo?
He was supposed to be one of Cal’s blue-chip freshmen this year. Now, he is not on the Cal roster, but he is competing at Junior Nats under Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics.
I think Hoffer has put more focus on his free this year. I also think he’s had a heavy schedule, so I’m not gonna predict anything too crazy… but I really want to… 19.5/21.4 for a 40.9
Daniel Roy has been improving steadily, and now he’s on King which is a breaststroke powerhouse (I’m in their LSC and they have like one guy that can’t go sub 1:00 in the 100)
Nothing crazy, just a 40 point for a HS senior 😛
