The 2nd place finishers aren’t guaranteed a spot on the team yet (though 1st through 4th in the 100 and 200 free get to go automatically for relays), because of a cap on team size. Only 26 men and 26 women are allowed on the team, which would be perfect if there were no relay swimmers, since there are 13 events with two individual spots for each. But, there are relay swimmers, so there is potential for there to be too many swimmers for the available spots.
However, it’s extremely unlikely for 26 different men to qualify for each unique spot on the team. Rather, there are instances where someone like Michael Phelps might qualify in two or three events, thus opening up more spots for people who finish second.
In all likelihood, enough swimmers will qualify in more than a single event, so all 2nd-place finishers in Omaha should make the team, too. Their spots just aren’t set in stone quite yet.
Should Conor Dwyer have the 200 Free listed too? Should Ryan Held and Anthony Ervin be listed with 4 x 100 Free Relay instead of 100 Free?
Where are the Open Water swimmers? Aren’t they factored into the grant total of M & W as well? Thank you.
No, open water swimmers already had their quota confirmed.
We are 5 days into the US Olympic Team Trials and no world records have gone done. Has that ever happened?
If am not wrong, there were no WR in the 2012 trials. Only 2 AR by Missy and Alison.
Yes, just four years ago in fact. 2012 US Olympics trials.
Did David Durden just got one swimmer of each stroke to the Olympics?? Josh Prenot (breast), Ryan Murphy (back), Tom Shields (fly), Nathan Adrian (free)… and there is more coming with Jacob Pebley! Did that ever happened?
Wow yes. Now that you mention it. That is amazing.
Councilman at Indiana did it – Spitz (fly, free), Hall (fly, back, IM), Kinsella (free), Dahlberg (breast) and probably you could expand this list if you locked back to the 60s.
Cal 400 medley relay at world champs 2017!? Prenot is just gonna get faster.
Eddie Reese, 2004 Athens:
Aaron Peirsol (back), Brendan Hansen (breast), Ian Crocker (fly), Neil Walker (free).
In fact, these foursome most certainly would have won Olympics gold.
I still don’t see how they are going to decide to cut some second place finishers, that’s just ridiculous and it’ll suck for them.
Relax, no second place finishers will be cut.
No one will be cut because they are not on the team until there is a spot available. FINA rule, max 26 men and 26 women from one country.
Not sure if the new FINA rule will impact swimmers that were 5th and 6th in the 100 free and 200 free: https://staging2.swimswam.com/new-olympic-rule-requires-relay-alternates-to-compete/
Only 1 of those 5th and 6th place finishers have been top 2 in another event Margalis
Thank you! I was a little confused.
Conor Dwyer’s 200 Free could be added to the list of guaranteed since he made it through the 4×200 Free.
13 events x 2 + 4 relay swimmers (3 and 4th place in the 100 & 200 free) = 30 with a max of 26 (not counting 5th and 6th since I think they are picked after the 2nd place finishers in the individual events).
Men: Cordes sits on 2 spots, Dwyer sits on 2 spots, assume that Lochte and Phelps makes it in the 200 IM then they sit on 2 spots each that would account for the 26 max so all 2nd place finishers are in and for safety we can guess that at least 1 of… Read more »
The way I calculate doubles (including auto ins via #2,3,4 on a free relay), all the second place women are now mathematically assured, with next 4 doubles bringing the #5, then #6 of the free relays aboard. Between Franklin, Ledecky, Volmer, Weitzel, Manual, Smith, King, Worell, Schmitt there are 9 chances to get these 4 doubles.
For the men, the picture is almost as certain, with but all but the lowest world ranked 2nd place finisher being assured (next double), then next 4 doubles bring the relay #5, #6 aboard in free relays. , Possible doubles – Phelps(2 events), Lochte, Murphy, Adrian, Dressell, Held, Ervin, Jaeger, Shields, so 10 chances (but 4 of these are potential 50 free doubles, with… Read more »
Still only have 3 doubles for the women, right? Smith, Ledecky, and Dorado. So they still need one more to get all the 2nd place finishers in.
What about 5th and 6th for 4×200 relay and 4×100 relay? When do they get announced or is there already too many swimmers to take them?
KALISYND– sorry, slipped on that. Added them in now!
whats the possibility of 5th and 6th not making the team?
Extremely small, now that there are more and more swimmers double up.
Why are the 5th and 6th place finishers in the 100 and 200 not on this list? Are they no longer tentative?
