Tennessee All-American Sam McHugh kicked off day 2 of the 2016 NC State GAC Invitational with a dominant swim in the men’s 400 IM prelims. McHugh was the only swimmer under 3:50 in prelims, clearing that mark by quite a bit with 3:43.50. That’s within 3 seconds of his personal best 3:40.64 from the 2015 SEC Championships, so look for him to possibly close in on that mark in the final.

In the 100 fly, UNC’s Hellen Moffitt led the way in the women’s race. Moffitt, a U.S. Olympic Trials finalist, clocked a quick 52.15 to take top seed ahead of Duke’s Leah Goldman (52.86). In the men’s version of that event, Notre Dame’s Matt Grauslys and NC State’s Ryan Held have set up a good race for tonight, taking the top 2 seeds with times of 47.03 and 47.06 respectively.

NC State’s Soeren Dahl, who won the 200 IM last night, is in position to challenge for another victory after taking top seed in the 200 free prelims. Dahl was nearly a second faster than anyone else with his 1:35.46. Also in the mix will be the Wolfpack’s Justin Ress and Notre Dame’s Reed Fujan, who tied for the 2nd seed at 1:36.39.

Kayla Brumbaum, a senior breaststroker for NC State, had a big swim this morning in the women’s 100 breast. Brumbaum broke through the 1:00 barrier for the first time in her career, clocking a 59.55 to take top seed. On the men’s side, Duke’s Peter Kropp popped a 53.03 to edge out NC State’s Derek Hren (53.25). Also in the 53-low range this morning was Kropp’s teammate Dylan Payne, who took 3rd seed in 53.29.

The NC State women landed a trio of 52s this morning to take the top 3 spots. Leading the way was Elise Haan, a sophomore transfer from FGCU, in 52.08. Haan was followed by All-American Alexia Zevnik (52.77) and fellow sophomore Courtney Caldwell (52.78). Also swimming sub-53 in prelims was UNC’s Hellen Moffitt, who took 4th in 52.88.

Notably, top seed Kira Toussaint, a Tennessee All-American in the 100 back, was disqualified in prelims.
