Northridge Area Swimming Association’s (NASA) Katie Hughes has opted to stay local, verbally committing to Purdue University for next fall.
Excited to announce my commitment to Purdue University! Can’t wait to continue my academics as a Boilermaker and swim on this great team! Boiler up!
Hughes is one of the top freestylers in the state of Indiana. Last year at the IHSAA Championships, she finished 2nd in the 500 free (4:53.57) and 5th in the 200 free (1:50.23). Additionally, she provided anchor legs of 23.85 and 51.68 on Northridge High School’s 200 and 400 free relays, respectively.
TOP TIMES
SCY unless otherwise noted
- 100 free – 52.81
- 200 free – 1:50.20
- 500 free – 4:53.57 (4:23.75 LCM)
- 1650 free – 17:11.19
Hughes is a 2016 USA Winter Jrs qualifier in the 400 free LCM as well as the 800 free LCM (9:01.03). A distance swimmer who can sprint, she matches the skillset of current Purdue star Kaersten Meitz, who finished top 5 in the 500 free and mile at B1G’s last season and also posted Purdue’s fastest 200 and 400 free relay splits.
It took a 4:50 to score in the 500 and a 16:46 to do so in the mile at B1G’s last season– those might be Hughes’ best shots of scoring as a freshman with the Boilermakers. She joins Gretta DeCoursey in Purdue’s class of 2021.
