There was never any doubt that the strongest team in the boys’ meet was Damien. The excitement in the 2016 CIF-Southern Section Division II championship meet was in the battle for the runner-up trophy, in which a half-dozen teams had an equal shot at coming out on top.
Boys’ Meet
Damien freshman Preston Planells (24.75) and seniors Mac Quinn (25.83), Grant Farias (23.01), and Richie Campbell (21.04) opened the meet with a 1:34.63 win in the 200 medley relay over Redlands East Valley (Benji Duenas, Jack Moyles, Reymond Munson, and Kyle Acevedo-1:35.46) and Aliso Niguel (1:36.19).
Glendale junior Trenton Julian won the 200 free in emphatic fashion, going a best time by 3 seconds and winning by three body lengths with 1:36.21. Chino Hills senior Michael Tenney improved on his seed time to earn the silver medal with 1:39.44, just ahead of Laguna Hills sophomore Matt Hales (1:40.13). Julian notched a second PB in the 100 fly, where he clocked a 47.88, missing the division record by .33. South Pasadena junior Jacob Mullin (49.59), Arroyo Grande junior Trent Schachter (49.94), and Calvary Chapel sophomore Andrew Koustik (49.96) came to the wall in a wave, all under the 50-second barrier.
Mission Viejo junior Min Zhi Chua moved up from third in prelims to win the 200 IM final in 1:50.76, thanks to an outstanding back half. He had already dropped 3 seconds in prelims, so the additional 2 in finals made it a lifetime-best by 5 seconds. Laguna Beach senior Cameron Karkoska was runner-up in 1:51.11. Chua went on to win the 100 breast as well. His 56.76 was also a lifetime-best. REV’s Jack Moyles (57.18) touched out Damien’s Quinn (57.31) and Calvary Chapel’s Koustik (57.49) for second place.
Arcadia junior Tenny Chong doubled with wins in the 50 free (20.59) and 100 back (49.69). Chong was in clear water in the 50, winning by .61 over Damien senior Richie Campbell (21.20) and El Toro senior Connor Wilde (21.23). It was a much tighter win in the 100 back, though, as South Pasadena’s Mullin challenged Chong over the second half and finished just .10 back with 49.79. Sonora junior Ben Blevins-Boor was third in that race with 50.39.
Blevins-Boor climbed to the top of the podium in the 100 free, where he took .74 off his lifetime best to win with 45.60. Sophomore Galen Penvenne of San Luis Obispo eked out the second-place spot over Laguna Beach senior Max Morgan, 45.94 to 45.96.
Chino Hills senior Michael Tenney clocked a personal-best 4:28.86 to win the 500 free. He was the first out of the blocks and continually kept at least a half body length lead on second-place Matt Hales of Laguna Hills. Hales, who had been pursued by Crean junior Kevin Chao, had a strong close and claimed second place by 2.6 seconds, 4:30.79 to 4:33.43.
El Toro (Jack Leighton, Chad Nelson, Aaron Leighton, and Wilde) thrilled the crowd with a come-from-behind win in the 200 free relay over Los Osos (1:25.83) and Santiago/Corona (1:26.09). With respective splits of 21.86, 21.49, 21.82, and 20.62, the El Toro boys got the win in 1:25.79.
Team champions Damien closed out the meet with a 3:07.31 win in the 400 free relay from junior Chase Travisano (46.88), senior Matt Maier (47.14), freshman Planells (47.99), and senior Campbell (45.30). Los Osos (3:09.60) held off Arroyo Grande (3:10.04) for second.
