The 2016 Brazilian Open, or Trophy Prof. Daltely Guimaraes, is set to take place this week. Competition will begin on Wednesday, November 23rd and conclude on Saturday, November 26th. Several Brazilian Olympians will be in attendance, with a few exciting head-to-head matchups to come.
One of those big matchups will come in the men’s breaststroke races. Brazilian breaststroke standouts Felipe Silva and Joao Gomes will meet in the 50 breast and 100 breast. Both swimmers represented to Brazil at the 2016 Rio Olympics this past summer, with Gomes finishing 5th and Silva finishing 7th in the 100 meter breast final.
Auburn-based sprint standouts Bruno Fratus and Marcelo Chierighini, who train with the Tigers’ post grad group, will be racing in the sprint freestyles. They’ll be in good company in those races, as a handful of other top men’s sprinters will be at the meet. One of those men is Joao De Lucca, a former NCAA Champion for Louisville. Also in the mix will be Pedro Spajari, Matheus Santana, and Felipe Souza.
But the action doesn’t stop there. The following is a list of some of the notable swimmers to look out for:
