Day 6 of the FINA World Junior Championships is set to kick off from Singapore. On this last day, all events will be contested for a spot in the final. Here are a few races to watch:
MEN’S 200 BACK
Britain’s Luke Greenbank (1:56.79) holds the top seed in the men’s 200 back, and his best is just off Li Guangyuan’s Junior World Record of 1:56.71. Greenbank will swim in heat 6 with Canada’s Markus Thormeyer.
Team USA has the 2nd and 3rd fastest seeds, with Austin Katz and Michael Taylor swimming in the fast lane of heats 4 and 5 respectively. While Greenbank is the heavy favorite, those 2 are in contention for podium finishes. Challenging Katz will be Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez.
WOMEN’S 200 BREAST
Junior World Record holder Viktoria Gunes of Turkey holds the top seed at 2:22.69 in the women’s 200 breast. Looking to take that record from her today will be Russia’s Mariia Astashkina, who comes into the morning with a 2:23.06. Japan’s Runa Imai is also in the mix with a 2:23.55 to hold 3rd seed.
With 3 swimmers within a second of the Junior World Record, including the current record holder, we could see it go down today. The Championship Record of 2:23.12 by Ukraine’s Viktoriya Solntseva is certainly under watch.
MEN’S 200 FLY
After winning the 100 fly earlier in the meet, Russia’s Daniil Pakhomov is also the favorite in the 200 fly. his 1:56.97 is within range of Andrew Seliskar’s Championship Record of 1:56.42. It’s also less than a second off Seliskar’s Junior World Record of 1:55.92.
Up to challenge Pakhomov will be USA’s Mike Thomas, swimming next to him in heat 6. Japan’s Nao Horomura and Italy’s Glacomo Carini will lead the other circle seeded heats. All 3 of these swimmers come in with times in the 1:57 range. USA’s Zach Harting will swim next to Horomura in heat 4 with a 1:58 entry time.
WOMEN’S 200 FREE
Russia’s Arina Openysheva leads the start lists of the women’s 200 free, slated to swim in lane 4 of heat 8. Her 1:58.22 is less than a tenth off the Championship Record set by Australia’s Tamsin Cook at 1:58.16 in a relay lead off this week.
The only other sub-1:59 entry belongs to Japan’s Sachi Mochida, who will swim in heat 7. With her in heat 7 is both of the Americans. Hannah Cox will take lane 5 next to Melissa Pish.
Also with a chance to win this event this event, Canada’s Taylor Ruck has proved that she’s one to watch at this meet. Ruck comes in with a 1:59.79 seed, but has had a few big swims out of prelims to show she’s faster than she looks on paper. She blazed to a 1:56.71 anchor on Canada’s 4×200 free relay, so look for her to dip under her seed time today.
Other events that will be swum during day 6 prelims include: The men’s 4×100 medley relay, women’s 4×100 medley relay, and men’s 1500 free early heats.
These 200 of strokes should be interesting. Wondering if USA gets 2 back in them…
Relay selection should be interesting. Makes sense to go Andrew on BR this morning when he has no swims… then swap Whitley in at night… by Andrew may be the flyer at night? Tough calls to make.
Thinking Aussie girls will be the ones to beat in Medley.
Could anyone possibly make a list for the times it took to qualify for the US team? I’m trying to help some of my swimmers make goals for next Summer or the summer after, and I just want to get a reference point.
Just look at the psych sheets. That has the times it took for them to qualify.
Idk about specific times, but you can go to the results from nationals and look at the top two juniors in each event, that’s the qualification.
