Scratches
There were quite a few scratches on the 4th day of this meet, as swimmers begin to get a better idea of where they stand in their training and endurance.
The biggest news is that the two headliners of the IX3/Seal Innovation Team squad have pulled out of the 400 freestyles – Chloe Sutton from the women’s race, and Charlie Houchin from the men’s race. Neither swimmer was having a great season, though Houchin did look like he was peaking at the right time – he swam well at the Bulldog Grand Slam a month ago, and had a solid swim earlier in this meet in the 200 free.
Sutton, meanwhile, was well off of the pace in her first two races, the 200 free and the 800 free, and didn’t look like she’d be close to a qualification in the 400 either. She was entered as the 2nd seed, and swam the event for the U.S. at Worlds last year.
Other scratches from the women’s 400 free include Quinn Carrozza (16th seed), Tristin Baxter (17th seed), and Shannon Vreeland (18th seed). On the men’s side, the #5 seed Conor Dwyer scratched, meaning that two of the top five on the psych sheets are out of this race. Dwyer has been solid at this meet and has done just enough to make the team, but not good enough where he was likely to win the 400 free with Connor Jaeger and Matt McLean racing very well. With his ticket to Australia stamped, Dwyer can try again at this 400 free at Pan Pacs.
Katie Hoff has scratched out of the 100 breaststroke where she was the 9th seed. Hoff has now scratched from two of her three entries, and so will put all of her marbles into the 200 IM basket on Sunday.
Scott Weltz and Andrew Seliskar, the #8 and #19 seeds respectively, scratched the men’s 100 breaststroke – with neither having another race to swim. Junior National Champion Amy Bilquist has dropped the women’s 100 backstroke.
Things to Watch For on Saturday
The women’s 100 breaststroke final is shaping up to be even better than we hoped for. Jessica Hardy was great in the 50 breaststroke, where she won, and Micah Lawrence was great in the 200 breaststroke, where she won. Breeja Larson, though, has been second in both, however, and while she hasn’t swum her absolute best long course times, she’s the two-time defending National Champion in the women’s 100 breaststroke.
Hardy has the speed, and Lawrence has the endurance, but Larson has the best balance of the three.
We’re also keeping an eye on Bethany Galat, who is following in Larson’s footsteps at Texas A&M. The Indiana native is one of the top two breaststrokers entering the NCAA this year, and looks like she has the same athletic build as Larson.
The men’s 100 backstroke should be as good as the 200 backstroke was earlier in this meet, except for replacing defending Olympic 200 champion Tyler Clary with defending Olympic 100 champion Matt Grevers.
And make one other addition – Michael Phelps, the greatest swimmer of all time, who has held his entry in the 100 back for now.
Throw that on top of Ryan Murphy, David Plummer, Shane Ryan, Olympic silver medalist Nick Thoman, and a field that goes 20 deep with National Team level guys, and everyone better take care in prelims to not miss the boat.
Did Bowman or Allison talk about her meet yesterday? She’s not just off where she would need to be at this meet to succeed; she’s waaaay off. It’s confusing. Speaking of people who may need a sports psychologist?
I hate to see someone so obviously kind-hearted and funny drop off this way.
If I remember well Mr Bowman’s interview I’ve watched, he said she was still in rebuilding mode but there was no reason to panic. He said she’s used to having ups and downs in her career so it’s not so worried according to him. He took the example of 2011 when she wasn’t very good at the world championships. And then she has focused in training and made the 2012 season we all know. He said she’s back mentally and it’s just a question of time. The goal is to rebuild her at 100% for 2016.
In conclusion, he didn’t look very worried.
And Allison said the goal was 2016.
Braden, if you are interested, I’ve found the race videos of both NAG records broken by Mr Lasco on Wednesday.

He can break the antique 200 IM record of 2.15.42 by Chas Morton tonight.
And he did it! 🙂
I don’t understand why there is always so much drama surrounding Katie Hoff! She is one of the most talented swimmers the US has produced! I have to believe her problems are more mental than physical, and she should have been seeing a Sports Psychologist for many years now.
I will be rooting for her very hard, but getting her feet wet in the 100 breast might have helped, so I’m disappointed. I hope she’s not I’ll or injured!
She has swum 55.75 in the 100 free prelims on day 1. It was not so bad.
It looks like she has only targeted the 200 IM this week. So she probably wants to be the fresher possible for that event tomorrow. A very open event. Margalis is perhaps the favorite. She was great in the 400 IM. Leverenz looked awful in the same race. Beisel is in great shape. And Kathleen Baker can drop a lot of time in my opinion. Katie Hoff will have to swim 2.10 high to qualify for Pan Pacs.
100 back for men is the most difficult to predict ! Thoman , Plummer , Murphy , Phelps , Grevers , Pebley . That’s gonna be like the 100 fly race : dense , undecided till the end in my vieuw . Great races in the 100 Breast and 400 free of course …..
It looks like you love very much that picture of Michael Phelps at swimswam. 🙂
What a schedule for today!
Women’s 400 free. Miss Ledecky in another episode of “catch me if you can”. What can we expect from her in final? I don’t believe in a sub 4 minutes race this week. Probably more a quiet 4.02/4.03. Leah Smith and Cierra Runge then? I’d like to see Courtney Harnish in the A-Final.
Men’s 400 free. It’s all Connor Jaeger. I’d like to see Townley Haas in the A-Final.
Women’s 100 breast. Jessica Hardy vs Breeja Larson for the win. I’d like to see Lilly King in the A-Final.
Men’s 100 breast. Kevin Cordes, Nic Fink… Read more »
Ledecky scratched her 400 IM yesterday. Her training has been focused on the 400 free. While I don’t see a sub 4 min time, I do expect a somewhat faster 4:00/4:01 time.
i beleive she is waiting Pan Pacs to make a statement on the 200 & 400 free ! 800 free is easely on her side allready for the win in 2 weeks >. Great battle with the Aussies on the 200 free .
Well you saw a sub 4min in prelims LOL you are going to see a WR tonight I think anyway!
Good call on Lilly King, nice to see her get some love!
Seliskar still has the 200 IM tomorrow, right?
btw, he still looks like a 18-19 yrs kid in that pic!
Katie should have done 200 Breast and 100 I think her breaststroke has improved a lot. Oh well, she better make it in 200 im now!
