2014 HONOREE: Karin Prinsloo, South Africa

South African Karin Prinsloo had a record breaking year. The 25 year old South African broke the long course African records in the 100 (54.48) and 400 freestyle (4:07.92). She also set new national marks in the 200 freestyle (1:57.17) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.77).

She was the only African woman to place in the top 30 in the world rankings placing 30th in the 100 and 400 freestyle and the 100 backstroke. She also ranks 19th in the world in the 200 freestyle.

Prinsloo was the only individual athlete from Africa to final at the Commonwealth games, placing eighth in the 200 freestyle. She also lead the South African team to two top eight finishes, placing fifth in the 4 x 100 medley relay and sixth in the 4 x 200 freestyle relay.

*The African Championships which were scheduled for September were cancelled due to the Ebola scare. Because of this fact many of the female African swimmers were not able to compete in what would have been their peak competition.
