The first morning of the 2014 NAIA National Championships went pretty much as we expected for the men. Two-time champions Oklahoma Baptist led the field with 10 finals qualifiers. The Bison loaded up the 50 free, as we predicted, and were strong in all other events as well.
The big surprise on the first morning was the stronger-than-anticipated showing by Olivet Nazarene, SCAD Savannah, and Wayland Baptist. ONU placed as many swimmers as OBU in championship finals. They were particularly successful in the 200 IM and 50 free. SCAD surprised us with their 2 A finalists in each the 500 and 50 frees. And WBU had a great medley relay and placed finalists in the 200 IM and 50 free.

200 medley relay: Defending champions OBU led the field in prelims with 1:30.44. The next championship final qualifiers were SCAD, Concordia, ONU, St. Andrews, Cumberlands, Union, and Wayland Baptist.
500 free: SCAD freshman Joel Ax was the top qualifier in prelims with a 4:29.50, more than six seconds faster than anyone else. Sam Borgman and 2013 champion Andrew Fischer, both of ONU, were the next qualifiers. OBU’s only A finalist was Andrew Nelson, at fourth. Teo Boscaino of St. Andrews, Bradley Moore of Union, Laszlo Perlaki of Concordia, and SCAD’s Ryan Searles rounded out the championship final.
200 IM: 2013 bronze medalist Gilles Cantrelle of OBU put up the fastest prelims time in the 200 IM with 1:50.94. ONU’s Jacob Anderson was second and his teammate Aaron Buchanan tied with OBU’s Daniel Robbins for third. SCAD freshman Karl Hegwein, Jacob Lear from Concordia, Jose Morales from Union, and Concordia’s Kevin Reichel also made the championship final.
50 free: 2013 runner-up Logan Lassley of OBU dropped a tenth off his seed time to post the top qualifying time of 19.85, which is only .02 off the NAIA record in the event. His competition tonight will be: Simon Pheasant (ONU), David Lambert (St. Andrews), AJ Barbar (OBU), Pat Cardillo (SCAD), Garland Sullivan (OBU), Ty Jacobs (ONU), and Mark Shvartsman (SCAD).
