#19 Recruit in Class of 2021 Luke Hobson Verbally Commits to Texas

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Luke Hobson, the 19th-ranked men’s swimming recruit in the high school class of 2021, has verbally committed to the University of Texas. Hobson lives in Reno, Nevada where he swims for the Lakeridge Swim Team and Reno High School.

In a 5-month period between December and April of his sophomore season, Hobson set lifetime bests in every yards freestyle event, including drops of 37 seconds in the mile, 19 seconds in the 1000, 6 seconds in the 500, 2 seconds in the 200, 2.2 seconds in the 100, and almost a full second in the 50 free. And all of that was before the Nevada High School State Championship meet in May.

That success carried to the summer, where he swam lifetime bests almost across-the-board, including almost a 3-second drop in the 400 free.

Hobson was the Nevada 3A & 4A State Champion last season in both the 200 and 500 yard freestyles as both a freshman and a sophomore, and has 12 Far Western Short Course Championship wins over the last 2 years.

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 20.84
  • 100 free – 44.98
  • 200 free – 1:38.48
  • 500 free – 4:27.20
  • 1000 free – 9:13.41
  • 1650 free – 15:33.09
  • 100 back – 51.90
  • 100 breast – 1:04.52
  • 100 fly – 49.75
  • 200 fly – 1:49.13
  • 200 IM – 1:59.08
  • 400 IM – 4:07.85

In the classes of 2019 and 2020, Texas went for “versatility,” signing a lot of top-tier backstrokers, breaststrokers, distance freestylers, and IMers. In this class of 2021 so far, the Longhorns have bolstered the short freestyle group that the foundations of their recent NCAA Championship 4-peat was built upon. That includes, to some extent, their first commitment in the class, the #1 ranked swimmer Anthony Grimm, who is a 45.6 backstroker, 52.5 breaststroker but also a 19.6 second freestyler (he’s the fastest in the class in all 3 events – a rare combination).
