14-year-old Miriam Sheehan has broken her own Puerto Rican national record in the women’s 50 fly for the second time in 3 months. Sheehan swam a lifetime best of 26.82 to break 27 seconds for the first time in her career and qualify 5th into the event semifinals at the 2019 World Junior Championships.
Sheehan’s meet entry time was put in at 27.59, however according to the Puerto Rican federation, she went 27.39 on June 22nd of this year to set the former national record.
Sheehan was formerly under American nationality before representing Puerto Rico. As a 10&U swimmer, Sheehan was an unstoppable force and broke numerous NAGs in both SCY and LCM pools. Her 7 NAGs in the fly/back events have yet to be broken today. If Sheehan were still to represent the USA, she would have been the 2nd-fastest 14-year-old 50 fly performer in the last decade.
In the last year, Sheehan has made her mark in the Puerto Rican national age and senior records. She currently holds five SCM and nine LCM 13-14 age group records in sprint free/fly/back. Along with her 50 fly national record, Sheehan also holds the 50 back LCM record at 29.24.
Moving to Puerto Rico after having so much success? That’s a little strange.
Well, she was a 12-13 year old kid at the time, so perhaps her family had a reason for moving that had nothing to do with swimming.
Oh cool. I hadn’t heard from her for a long time, since breaking all those 10&u NAG’s
I too had been wondering what happened to Miriam. She smashed all of Regan Smith’s 10&U SCY NAG records (notably, taking Regan’s 59-mid 100 back record down to 57-high), but in recent years had all but disappeared from the USA Swimming database. Glad to see she is still competing at a very high level.
