1 National HS Record and 8 State Records Fall During Prelims Of Indiana Girls State Championships

Carmel High School is well on their way to their 29th consecutive state title after breaking a national HS relay record and seven state records during the prelim session of the 2015 Indiana Girls High School State Championships. Claire Adams and Emma Nordin made the biggest ways on the first night of the meet, but their whole team showed up and was ready to perform. Emma Nordin broke two state records in her individual events, the 200 and 500 freestyle. One heat after Nordin broke the state record in the 200 free, Claire Adams hopped in and topped her time, lowering the state record once again. Later in the session, Adams also broke the state record in the 100 backstroke.

Veronica Burchill was the next Carmel swimmer to break a state record with her effort in the 100 butterfly. Following Burchill, Amy Bilquist dove in and broke another state record in the 100 freestyle. The final state record of the day came from FJ Reitz High School’s Lilly King in the 100 breaststroke. In total, 8 state records were broken during the prelim session.

All of Carmel’s relays and all three Carmel swimmers in each individual event qualified for finals tomorrow. Mathematically, It will be almost impossible for Carmel not to repeat as state champions.

200 Medley Relay – Prelims

Here we go again! Carmel opened up the night with a new National Public High School Record to earn the top seed in the 200 medley relay with their time of 1:40.33. That lowers their national record from last year by a half a second and also tops the independent school record to give them the overall high school record. Crown Point and Columbus North qualified second and third at 1:43.09 and 1:43.57, respectively. To qualify in the top 8 took a 1:45.55 and 16th was 1:49.03.

200 Freestyle – Prelims

Two state records fell during the 200 freestyle in consecutive heats. The first state record was broken by Carmel sophomore Emma Nordin with her time of 1:46.78. She had a very strong finish, splitting 26.75 on the final 50 of her swim. With the crowd still cheering, Carmel junior, Claire Adams, stepped up on the blocks and proceeded to crush Nordin’s state record with a 1:45.09.

Tomorrow final is going to be fast. The top 5 girls are all under 1:48 and you had to be under 1:50 to qualify in top 8 for tomorrow. The time to make the B final in the girls 200 freestyle was 1:54.17.

200 IM – Prelims

Lilly King dominated the back half of her prelim swim to earn the top seed in the 200 IM at 1:58.86. Three other girls, Taite Kitchel, Nicole Smith, and Lauren Edelman were all under 2 minutes as well. It took a 2:01.64 to make the A final and a 2:06.31 to make the B final.

50 Freestyle – Prelims 

Carmel’s Amy Bilquist claimed the top seed in the 50 freestyle with her time of 22.19. She just missed her state record from last year of 22.15. Behind her, there is a large collection of girls with low 23’s. Bilquist’s teammate, Kendall Smith, posted the second fastest time at 23.08 and Robyn Clevenger had the third fastest time at 23.22.

It took a 23.68 to qualify for tomorrow’s A final and a 24.35 to qualify for the B final.

100 Butterfly – Prelims

Carmel’s Veronica Burchill added the fourth state record of the meet with her time of 52.59 to earn the top spot in the girl’s 100 butterfly. Nicole Smith added the second fastest time at 53.48, .01 seconds ahead of last year’s state champion, Aly Tetzloff, at 53.49. Christine Jensen was the final swimmer under 54 seconds at 53.63.

It took a 55.16 to qualify for the A final and a 56.68 to qualify for the B final.

100 Freestyle – Prelims

Carmel high school is on a roll! Amy Bilquist posted the fastest time of the session to earn tomorrow’s top seed, touching the wall in a new state record time of 48.67. She set the previous record at last year’s state meet with her time of 48.93.

Kendall Smith posted the second fastest time at 50.31, followed by Lauryn Parrish at 50.57 and Kylie Mihok at 50.64. To qualify for tomorrow’s A final took a 51.20, and it took a 52.27 to qualify for the B final.

500 Freestyle – Prelims

Emma Nordin is making a name for herself as one of Carmel’s elite during tongiht’s prelim session. After breaking the state record in the 200 freestyle earlier, Nordin came back during the 500 freestyle and broke a 13 year old state record with her time of 4:45.15. The previous record was set in 2002 by former NCAA record holder and USA National Team member, Leah Retrum, at 4:46.08. Nordin’s state record was the sixth of the night for Carmel.

Last year’s state champion, Hannah Kukurugya, qualified second with her time of 4:49.76, Abbegayle Schneider was third at 4:52.00, and Emily Meckstroth qualified fourth at 4:52.62.

It took a 5:00.09 to qualify for the A final and a 5:05.07 to qualify for the B final.

200 Freestyle Relay – Prelims

Carmel claimed the top spot in the 200 freestyle relay with their time of 1:32.45. They were slightly off of their national and state record that was set last year. Crown Point posted the second fastest time to qualify second at 1:34.20 and Zionsville was third with their time of 1:34.58.

It took a 1:36.80 to qualify for the A final and a 1:39.13 to qualify for the B final.

100 Backstroke – Prelims

7 for 7! Carmel’s Claire Adams broke the state record in the 100 backstroke with her time of 51.99. She is now within 6 tenths of a second of Olivia Smoliga‘s national record as a high school junior. Her teammate, Sammie Burchill, posted the second fastest time at 54.39, and Grace Haskett was third with her time of 54.57.

It took a 56.52 to qualify for the A final and a 57.83 to qualify for the B final of the girls 100 backstroke.

100 Breaststroke – Prelims

Lilly King broke the eighth state record of the meet to earn the top spot in the women’s 100 breaststroke. She posted a time of 59.63 to break Texas A&M freshman Bethany Galat’s record of 59.66. She was the first swimmer of the meet that is not from Carmel HS to break a state record.

Lauren Edelman had the second fastest time at 1:02.88, followed by Kelsi Artim in third at 1:02.91. It took a 1:04.94 to qualify for the A final and a 1:06.70 to qualify for the B final.

400 Freestyle Relay – Prelims

Carmel posted the fastest time of the session to claim the top seed in the women’s 400 freestyle relay. They missed the national record by .7 seconds with their time of 3:21.90. Zionsville was second with their time of 3:26.10 and Hamilton Southeastern was third at 3:27.48.

It took a 3:30.82 to qualify for the A final and a 3:35.82 to qualify for the B final.
